Think this is the write place for it.

I have a HDTV that accpets 480i/480p and 1080i. Now dvd's are made in 480i, is it possiable to convert it to a file that tmpeg could reincode into progessive scan for a better picture, or would the loss of quality make the difference when watching it in 480p.

If I playback my dvds from computer to HDTV via DVI, when it enables the 1080i, would that give me a real 1080i picture, or just 480i majorly upscaled?

you can buy upscale dvd players that convert to 1080i through the DVI port. BUt all you are ending up with is a 480i picture stretched and quickly enhanced to fit. There really is not much point to do it.

Wait till bluray comes out and start buying Bluray DVD's they should support a 1080i resolution of some sort.
