    Hi,
I'm getting a high pitch screeching noise coming from the cpu/fan area, my cpu is a AMD Athlon XP 2.2Ghz(1800Mhz), it happens firstly when on the net when I scroll up/down on mouse then after say 5/10 minutes its constant.

Anyone know whats wrong is it the cpu or the fan.

    Cheers in advance.

first check your temp to make sure it isn't the cpu alarm warning of heat. second it sounds to me like maybe the bearings are going out in your fan on your heatsink, in which case you need to open up your case get a screwdriver unscrew the fan, unplug it from it's source go to a store like bestbuy, circuit city, or radio shack and get a replacement. if it is heat you need to take off the heatsink not by pulling it straight off but by twisting it litle either way, till it loosens, you will find it easier to remove after doing some intensive cpu task and shutting down, clean off your cpu with cotton swabs and balls with rubbing alcohol. then get some more thermal paste apply a dot the size of a grain of rice put your index finger into a corner of a baggie then rubb it around the cpu to it has a thin layer then reattach heatsink and reboot!

try to localize the noise a bit further by listening with a tube to 1 ear as it could also be the psu
