    Hi all.

Ive been using Nero Vision Express 2 & the Nero suiteits packaged with, and the even crappier software MyDVD which came with my expensive notebook HP computer, Windows XP Pro, SP2.
They Both SUCK Rocks! So incredibly limited as to be rudely kindergarten level, with only being able to use the huge, one dimensional .avi files to burn to dvd, extermely limited iin terms of ease of menu, font sizing, placement creation, etc..

(MyDVD SAYS it will also burn .wmv but it LIES! I have tried many, many times to burn my moviemaker home movies into movies to watch on DVD always to wasted DVD discs!)

So, Im wondering, as likely others are, does anyone know of any high quality, much more user friendly, considerate, professional and versatile

( in terms of media files able to be burned directly to video DVD formats, menu creation, etc)

movie / DVD authoring, transcoding, creation & burning software all in one that we DONT have to pay anymore money for? Im tired of paying money for trash. And simply cant afford to pay any more money, period for anything other than my fundamental bills like rent, utilites, vehicle & food. But we shouldnt have to just like down and be satisfied and settle with being ripped off with junky software and programs.

Any recommendations? NO SHAREWARE! I dont even know why its called shareware, as if to make it seem its somehow closer to freeware when you still have to pay more money for it than freeware. No more money to filthy rich thieves! Especially when most of us work our lives away making less then enough to meet our basic, mundane living expenses while others are making a friggin killing by essentially stealing from us when they have so much more money and are making way more then needed for basic survival and mundane living expenses.

Anyway, back on topic - any recommendations of no cost, truly high quality, professional DVD authoring, creation software? And please dont recommend these TMPGE softare programs, as ive tried them and they are not so effective as theyd like to come off, and still theyre not free. Trial ware is not free. Thanks.

I have never tried to convert .wmv to DVD. Other wise I have found Tmpenc to work very well. I tried a lot of the others , too many skips and out of sync audio. Tmpenc was the best of the lot. The output is only as good as or comparable to the input. ie , how good is the file that you are trying to convert?

You might want to try this site:

    http://www.goripper.com/wmv-to-mpg.html

    Key Features
    Convert between various formats including WMV, MPG, MOV, MPEG, DVD, VCD, SVCD, RM, AVI, WMV, MPEG 1/2/4, 3GP;

what 72morgan said is correct, you cannot expect a great quality movie from a crappy quality original...

The quality of the original files i was trying to burn for this past file were fine. But they were avi files, and one mpeg file converted to an avi file using tmpge. However the mpeg file converted to avi using tmpge was better then the tmpge converted avi file, as the converted file was very skippy, erratic unlike the original. It skipped like it was stuttering, unlike the original.

You are on the right path now. When you reencode from avi, wmv to dvd, it is not necessarily your fault that it is a crappy file. When you reencode to DVD it is the same as over enlarging a photo. The picture gets grainy and the quality goes down hill. You are blowing up or enlarging the avi file to dvd files by transcoding. Picture quality loss is to be expected.

You really can not expect to Find High Quality encodeing and Authoring software for free, If there was such a Thing then every one would be useing it.....

I personally Find that i can do pretty much anything I need to do by useing a Good High Quality mpeg-2 encoder (Tmpgenc, MainConcept Encoder, Canopus Procoder, CCE SP) and a Good DVD authoring program Like "MediaChance DVDLab Pro" and all Of my DVD"s Turn out Great, even the Ones that I squeeze 3 or 4 movies on to Look Good and all are in Perfect sync...I also have a Very advanced knowlege of Digital video so If I do run into problems I can useually Figure out how to solve them ....

There are Literally thousands of programs out there that Clainm to be the Best at what they do and Claim to be Trouble Free but out of the Hundreds of programs I have used only a Handfull of them were even worth trying and neither "Nero Vision Express" nor "Sonic MyDVD" were definately Not one of them......

Thank you all for your input. I relooked at the files, and realized i was still trying to use a few mpeg files which were not avi files, like i first assumed. My mistake, though i really wish i knew of quality program(s) to use which would effectively and simply accept not only avi files but mpeg, mpg, other files as well and create quality video dvds from them.

Minion - So which are those few quality programs? Yes, ive been discovering the same thing with so many highly acclaimed free as well as retail programs, that they work quite poorly.

    Any specific recommendations are appreciated.

Well For Converting your AVI/MPG/WMV files to DVD Compliant Mpeg-2 Format I recomend one of these Encoders....

    [bold]Tmpgenc Pluss/Express[/bold]

Good all arround Encoder that accept most formats and produces top Notch Quality and has a Lot of Features and is easy enough to use that a Newbie can use it with a Little Guidance but the encodeing is a Little Slow...

    [bold]MainConcept Encoder[/bold]

Good Quality encoder that accepts Most Formats...It is a Very fast encoder and produces very good Quality and is Very good but it is a Little Harder to use than Tmpgenc and doesn"t have as many features Like Filters but it is a Good Choice if you have some encodeing experience....

    [bold]Canopus Procoder[/bold]

Very Good Quality encoder that accepts Most formats and encodes to most Formats and Can even Create for you a Video_TS Folder that you just Burn to DVD...It has Lots of Features and Filters and Is Considered one of the Best quality encoders on the Market and it is the very Best encoder for Converting Frame Rates or encodeing From Pal to NTSC or NTSC to Pal...It"s only real drawback besides the Price ($500) is that when encodeing at the Highest quality it is Fairly Slow....

    [bold]CinemaCraft Encoder SP 2.70[/bold]

This is a Top Quality encoder that is Extremely Fast and When used correctly produces the best quality of probably any encoder and at a Very low Bitrate but it has quite a few drawbacks like it only Natively accepts AVI files with Uncompressed audio or Quicktime Files and it can not convert frame rates and have very few Filters and the settings are hard to understand....

This encoder is aimed at video professinals and is set up that way so you need to have a Pretty advanced Knowlege of Digital video and Mpeg encodeing and it is also allmost essential that you know how to use a Frameserver like AVISynth or V-Dub with it....

I Personally use CinemaCraft Encoder SP 2.70 with AVISynth and I also use Vegas Video 6 to encode the audio to Dolby AC3 but that isn"t necessary..
It actually took me quite a while to figure out the best settings for each type of Video to get the best results but now I pretty Much have my system down and i rarely if ever run into problems....

As for DVD authoring I Personally like to use "MediaChance DVDLab Pro" cuz it is a Full On professinal Quality DVD authoring program but it is Much easier to use than other Programs of it"s caliber....

It supports multiple audio tracks and Multiple subtitle streams and Motion Menu"s and you can even use it to Back up VCD and SVCD files to DVD Without Re-Encodeing and it also can make Multi-VTS DVD"s which means you can Mix Video"s of Different Aspect ratio"s and even Different Resolutions on the Same DVD which is a Feature that you won"t find in many programs...
It also has a Sort of Shrink feature so if you load in a Movie and It happens to be to Big to fit on the DVD the DVDLab can add a Little Bit of Compression so that it is a Bit smaller and Fits on the DVD....It also has many many more Features that are pretty good but I mostly like the Menu features cuz it Can create some Very Cool Looking Menu"s....

You can Download a Fully working 30 day demo of the Program and even some of the encoders above have demo versions available that work like the Full version for 30 days like Tmpgenc.....

    Cheers

I never had much luck with Nero Vision Express either. I have used several Tmpenc products with very good results. Not only am I using them to transcode the video ,[ XVID to DVD ] it is converting the video from PAL to NTSC. So I highly recommend Tmpenc.

But i cant seem to get TMPGE MPEG Editor to convert mpg files to avi, which avi is the only format my lousy dvd creation / burn software seems to be willing to burn to video dvd from.

I had the trial versions of TMPGE editor, plus.5, express & DVD Author 1.6, but all their free trial has expired, and i cant afford to pay for anymore fee based software.

Any others which will convert my mpg mpeg files to video dvd burnable playable .avi files with good quality and free, anyone can recommend?
