Need to capture a high res video screensaver and too jerky with Fraps, etc. Tried numerous programs. Can you capture screen via firewire to a second computer? I want to make a music DVD with aquarium displaying and would like good resolution to allow good encode to DVD via avisynth/tmpgenc. One of my computers has onboard intel graphics, the second one has a Nvidia 6200. Have already tried scan convertors.

Yeah, tried Snagit, Fraps, CamStudio and a bunch more. The best was CamStudio with its lossless codec. Still trying to balance CamStudio framerates for smoother capture. The hi-res capture is very good and it has the smoothest so far. Just not quite good enought. I'm aware that the computer is having to run the screensaver, run CamStudio and write to disk at the same time.

Was trying to come up with some "streaming" method from screen. I use both ATI OTA HDTV and Hauppage PVR-150 cards, so see a real need for a hi-res hardware encoder board. Unfortunately, none seem to exist. Hence my question on firewire between two machines, one to run the screensaver, another to capture the video out.

I want to stay in hi-res as direct reduction to 720x480 degrades the video too much. If I could capture at a higher resolution, I could encode with filters to produce a good DVD.

OH right ok sorry then. I don't know really. Wouldn't having two monitors be pointless becos wouldn't the screensaver run on btoh monitors?

No, 2 computers. One to transmit video via firewire another to stream to disk.

That's the idea. Need to know if someone knows how to do this.

Have you tried Capture Professional v6 for Windows? It captures user defined area(s) of your Windows desktop as still images or video. If you capture images, you can tweak them with Capture Professional's integrated editor. Its video screen capture engine is optimized for high frame rates. You probably want to uncheck the Include DirectX surfaces... check box on the Capture Includes pane.

More generic tips that may apply to other screen capture tools as well:

Decrease the resolution of your display adapter if you can tolerate it.

Change your display adapter to 16-bit color if you can stand it. This will halve the data captured, which for your purposes may be a good thing.

You may also get marginally better performance by defragmenting your hard drive.

You can download the trial of Capture Professional v6 directly at http://www.creativesoftworx.com/pro/try.html
