HijackThis log; post-Vundo & Fakelert cleaning-Machine still won't boot in Safe Mode-

Hi all,

I'd really appreciate it If someone could have a look at my HJT log below. I included the full story as it might interest someone, and it could be relevant.

My computer was compromised by:
-Trojan.Vundo (Trojan.Virtumonde)
-Trojan.FakeAlert

My Tools: Norton, Spyware Doctor, Comodo BC, Malwarebytes AM.

Symptoms:
(1) Yellow "Symantec Anti-virus disabled" warning at the right bottom corner of screen.
(2) Pop-ups to fake anti-malware sites (often immediately after (1) appeares).
(3) Comodo alert that a (Comodo) file is corrupt (at start up).
(4) Unable to update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
(5) Unable to update Norton (while LiveUpdate seemingly works). Norton could perform scans, but didn't detect anything.
(6) Windows alert that I have no virus protection (red shield).
(7) Unable to boot machine in Safe Mode.

Despite the Windows alert, Norton seemed to work & update, except that the protection files were stuck at the date 12-12-2009.

(1) I searched this board and tried most of the advice, but Trojans kept regenerating.
(2) Finally, followed one advice to use Combofix. After the scan, I didn't get the usual symptoms at startup.
(3) Re-installed Norton and Comodo immediately after, updated both succesfully.
(4) Updated Java Runtime.
(5.1) Spyware doctor didn't detect Vundo or FakeAlert for the first time since I got infected...
(5.2) ...but detected a Trojan.Generic and a few low risk applications (neither had been detected prior to using Combofix).
(6) Full Norton scan: Finds 129 Vundo files, cleans with startup.
(7) Full Norton scan: Clean.
(8.1) Malwarebytes' AM scan: finds "Broken Security Providers", cleans.
(8.2) Norton Auto-Protect Blocks "Trojan.Vundo" during above scan!!! [I guess the agent in the above step invites Vundo].
(9) Malwarebytes scan: Clean

I'm not sufficiently knowledgeable on this stuff to understand what exactly happened, but these seem to be pretty sneaky ones.

So now, the Trojans seem to be gone & don't even show up to be blocked by Norton. But I still think some inviting agent (or, whatever else they're called) could still in my system.

Also, as the title suggests, I still can't reboot in Safe Mode.

(Q1) Am I clean?
(Q2) What do I do to be able to reboot in Safe Mode.

Hi dburak,

First, let’s dig a little deeper and see what we come up with:

1. Download Combo fix from one of these locations.
* IMPORTANT !!! Place combofix.exe on your Desktop

2. Click start > run and Copy and Paste this in exactly, using the picture below for reference, then click OK.

3. Combo will begin to run DO NOTHING while this is happening.
• It will kill a few processes and disconnect you from the internet.
• If by chance it stops prematurely you can re-establish your internet connection by restarting your computer.
• This needs to be done so the program can work most efficiently for you.
Do not attempt to use the internet or anything else while it's doing its job for you.

**Understand that things like your system clock changing and your desktop disappearing might happen. Do not worry, because all will be restored later.

If when it's completed you can not get on the internet just reboot the computer

Post the log from comboFix for me located in
c:\comboFix.txt
Also post a fresh HJT Log

Thanks for your response.

I know you would have mentioned this if it was necessary, but I just wanted to confirm that I do not need to disable any real-time protection (Spyware Doctor, Norton, ComodoBC) for this process.

It's not necessary to disable anything..

The way I'm having you run it disables the processes.... like safe mode.

Here are the Combofix & HJT logs.

NOTE: The minute I started Combofix, I got a Comodo mesage telling me I got a Trojan (NIRCMD.com). I thought the message was by Combofix and clicked "YES, delete it please" to delete the file. Something similar happened towards the end of scan (when log was being prepared and my icons were already reactivated), at which point Comodo might have interfered to delete a Combofix file.

So, let me know if I need to run it again.

OOPS, My Bad! I forgot to tell you to delete the old ComboFix on your machine.
That file belongs to ComboFix and sometimes it thinks it’s a Trojan.

Please download OTCleanIt and save it to desktop.
• Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
• Click the CleanUp! button.
• Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
• If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
• The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

This will delete ComboFix and if you would please follow the instructions to run it again and we’ll see if it picks up anything else.

How are things, any problems??

I see a few leftovers that I don’t believe are doing any harm but I like a clean kitchen..

Can you now up date Your AV and Malwarebytes?
If you can update MalwareBytes’ please do so and run a scan..
Or you should be able to update and run it in Safe Mode:

Run MBAM in Safe Mode:

Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and before the Windows icon appears press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode with Networking".


Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
• At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- Don't forget this.
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

• Please post the MBAM Log in your next reply.

Apparently I can reboot in Safe Mode now. The MBAM log (ran in safe mode) is below. It didn't detect anything.

The machine seems to be working fine. As late as two days ago, I was being attacked by a few trojans who were stopped by Norton. No visible problems since then.
