Hi kst68dog, sorry no one has replied sooner. The laptop you have bought - has it got a built in wireless capability? In otherwords is it a Centrino, or Pentium M etc ? What is the Internet connection you have? Is it Broadband or dial-up? The PC you want to connect to, does it have a network card already (RJ45 cable or wireless network card)
i have a 1meg broadband connection ,the labtop is a pentium 4 ,when i click on properties on my computer it says its mobile?,my desktop ? i have no idea ! its an intel celleron, thats about all i know.can i just buy a kit to make it wireless?
OK broadband - who is you supplier? ADSL or cable - what method is used to connect you to the internet modem box? If the gadget supplied was free with the deal, then you probably have a modem which plugs in to your USB. Does you PC need to be Wireless or is it near to the broadband point? Laptop - you need to check if it is a Pentium Mobile - i.e. comes with built in wireless capability. Check the book to see if it has a wireless capability.
my isp is aol,i have a adsl modem which does plug into a usb,i only have one telephone point downstairs ,which is ok for the desktop .do i not just use a card for my laptop that slots in on the side of it cause theres a space there for it.
Sorry for the delay - thought I had responded - going mad in my old age. OK to setup a wireless network you will need an ADSL wireless Router. It is important to get an adsl router as they are different to dsl. ADSL dials up such as BT Broadband and DSL links to a cable provider such as NTL. So the router choices. I think Netgear is the best followed closely by Linksys (a division of Cisco). I recomend that you do not get a belkin as I have had lots of problems - they are cheap and you get what you pay for. An example being http://www.dabs.com/uk/Search2/Product+Details.htm?quicklinx=2Z9M&searchphrase=adsl Your PC needs to connect to this and if it is next to or near the router, you can do this by a wire - RJ 45 and network card. The Network card http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/hardware/networking/productView.htm?quicklinx=1Y31 The RJ45 Cat 5 Patch Network Cable http://www.dabs.com/uk/Search2/Product+Details.htm?quicklinx=2TLR&searchphrase=cat5 Make sure you get a cable that is long enough - though if I remember correctly, the router does come with one cable. If your Laptop does not have built in wireless functionality, then you will need a pcmcia wireless card. You can by cheaper, but I suggest that the range on some cards is not as good as others, therefore I would again go for a Linksys http://www.dabs.com/uk/Search2/Product+Details.htm?quicklinx=2CM9&searchphrase=pc wireless Hope this helps you on the way Have a look at what Microsoft have to say http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/broadbandnetworking/10_concept_wireless_range.mspx
