Both my original xbox's run to hot and noisy for my likeing. One has a 200gb hdd in in the other a 160gb. Both are softmodded. Mine(the 200gb) one is often at around 65°c and the other day it got to the point where the film I was watching in XNMC started stuttering and freezing. So anyone know any decent mods to keep them cooler? I have to have the fan set at 4.0x atm just to keep it cool enough to play films but it's so noisy! Thanks.
Open them up and clean all the fluff and dust out.. The fan is pretty standard so you could look at getting a quieter higher flow one. The fans fitted on the 1.1-1.2 had more blades than the later ones, and seem to run cooler.
They're both 1.6's and pretty much dust free already, I've given them as much space as possible free around them.
llamma has a 12v fan mod, and lots of other articles about cooling. the 1.6 does tend to run hotter due to the fan. I don't know what else you can do really except try looking for higher rated fans.. possibly some p3 series cpu fans will do a better job.
I'm running a 1.6 version with a 12v fan mod and it is a little louder but I feel safer with the box not heating up. I have seriously thought of putting the xbox in a bigger case as well.
