So I picked up the afore mentioned dialer (wasn't even looking at questionable material this time). Any one know how to get rid of it? Norton failed. So did spy sweeper and spy bot. Just got xsoft and avg. if these don't do it what will? thanx

Also, I cant update windows xp. Every time it goes for the validation tool I get the error
<C:\documen-1\\locals-1\temp\IXP000.tmp\setup.exe> reason: the path specified can not be found.

I really dont want to do a clean install what can I do?

Does Norton find it though but fails to delete it? Usually their is a link when it finds the virus file and takes you to symantecs web site and it might show you how to manually get rid of it....

I had the same problem with Norton and that dialer, I wound up reformatting my whole drive to get rid of it, Norton has turned out to be a piece of junk anymore, will go to something else when the time is up

If Rosco's advise doesn't work then try another antivirus program before resorting to reformatting your entire HDD. I had a problem with a virus recently which Norton detected but could not quarantine or remove. I downloaded EZ Antivirus(because of its free trial for 1yr) and it detected the virus & allowed me to remove it. It's early days for me to pass any judgement on this product so I can't say if it's a good or bad antivirus program but it did what Norton's couldn't, so you be the judge. As for the fact that your update fails at the validation phase, its sounds like you may have a version of XP which was downloaded or at least mass copied & passed on. I'm not trying to offend you, so please don't get upset. You may very well unknowingly have such a copy of XP especially if a friend loaded it for you or if a small local entity does you computer fixes and maintenance for you. If you have an authentic copy then I'm stumped.

I think I got it using a norton/spy sweeper/ lavasoft ad-ware se combination. though lavasoft added its own little proggy when I installed it.
