How Can I Keep Hold Of 5.1 Audio When Converting Avi to DVD?

    Hi Guys copied loads of avi movies to dvd, i ve converted loads to dvd some have at best average 5.1 sound to normal 2 channel stereo.

    However 1 file which got exactly converted to mpeg first and then to dvd has superb 5.1 sound quality.

    Is this the way forward?

    Or can i get better sound quality using the m2v and mp2 audio and video files way?

    Anybody have any ideas regarding sound quality when converting from AVI to DVD?
