I have heard you can fit more mp3's on a dvd-r , I am new at this and don't know what steps or software to use. I currently have windows media player, Vista for operating system. I would like to be able to play them in my car cd player for long trips for the kids to listen to without change 50 cd's.

Very few players will play mp3-DVD. I doubt that an auto player will do it. If you lower the bit rate on your mp3's, you can get several hundred songs on a mp3 CD.

I would try the mp3's as they are to see how many would go on the CD. If you can not get enough on as they are then you can use this free program to lower the bit rate...
