How do i convert a DAT file to another video format?

    I have a film that is a DAT file, i have no problem watching it on my computer but when i try burning it the sound is all screwed up. The sound scrambles every so often but the video is normal. Can anyone help me? Can i fix that problem or convert it to another video file such as avi or mpeg?
