You can't play an avi directly on your website - you can store it there and create link so someone can download it, but I'm assuming what you want to do is have it play on your website with a link?

If so, there are several ways. The first way is quite expensive and requires server side software to stream the file. Not likely this is for you or you probably would already understand it so the next best way is to convert the file into a web compatible format.

I would suggest converting it to Flash. Perhaps the least expensive way is to use a product such as the Riva Flash Lite Flash encoder and player. There are two types of Flash file. The first way which produces .swf files is designed for small movie clips not to exceed 16,000 total frames. At about 30 frames per second this means a little less than 9 minutes maximum. The second way produces .flv Flash files which have no such limitation. An FLV file acts very much like streaming video except the file itself is actually downloaded in the background and the movie is streamed from the hard disk of the viewer in real time. To the user, it's exactly like a professional streaming video.

Riva sells the encoder and funishes a free player which resides on your web site. It doesn't take too long to learn to create the FLV files. You simply feed the encoder your AVI file and it spits out the FLV Flash file. Riva then uploads the FLV file, player and such to you web site and creates an html file which you link to. You furnish a simple link in your web software to the html file and when the viewer clicks on your link the movie plays. Of course this requires the viewer to have Flash enabled on their computer and if they don't, the Riva file will detect this and link them to the Flash download and in a few seconds they will be able to see the movie.

Plan on spending a few days learning how to do this - but it's not difficult. Here's a link to the Riva site where you can download a free trial to see how it works for you. Total cost about $30 for the Riva Lite encoder. Below the Riva link is a link to a simple slideshow I created with PicturesToExe and converted via Riva to an FLV Flash slideshow. Click on the link and when the show starts you can move your mouse cursor into the image and see the Riva Player's controls. Move the cursor outside and the Player controls go away. This isn't a "movie" per se, but movies work exactly the same way. This just happens to be a still slideshow with music.
