i have a multi episode dvd that i want to make a backup of but its way too big and i dont wanna lose the quality or extras can anyone give me help with how to do it and what prog to use please
There are several ways to do this. One would be to use DVD Decrypter to rip each episode seperately via the IFO mode. I would set the program up so that the episodes are ripped as one large VOB each (rather than being split into separate 1.xxxGB files). Also, use stream processing to remove any subtitle and/or audio streams that you don't need. Next, use TMPGEnc DVD Author to author new titlesets that include half of the episodes. This program will accept VOB files as input, and will make up a snazzy new menu for you. Finally, check the size of the resulting titleset. If it is smaller than 4.3xxGB, just burn it straight. If it is too large, use a compressor like DVD2One or DVDShrink to lower the size before burning. (The amount of compression required at this point, if any, will not be sufficient to lower quality appreciably) LIke I said, there are many possible ways, but this one is easy and would yield top-notch results. Good luck....
I use DVD Shrink, select the first 2 episodes of a 4 episode disc and go through the process in DVD shrink. Then i do it again for the episodes i left out. Easy peasy
if i use dvd shrink to basically rip the first 2 then the final 3 episodes how do i get the menus and extras in it and will menus show up on both discs ?
No, there wont be any menus or extras. I hate menus and extras, so it doesnt bother me, but in your case, im not usre how you would do it without creating your own menus.
The process I described above would yield menues, but not the ones on the original DVD. On the other hand... Maybe CloneDVD would do it. I haven't tried the program yet, but understand that it is more flexible about allowing menues to be retained while cutting out extras and such (unused menu options are greyed out by the program). There is a free, fully-functional trial available, so it is worth a try.
You don't have to split your multi episode DVD in order to back it up to DVD-R. Take a look at the latest version of Nero. You can use SmartRipper to back up all the files on the DVD to your hard drive, the use Nero Recode to burn to DVD-R. It retains all the original menus, and I can't tell any difference in the video quality. With my 4X burner the whole process takes only about an hour.
I forgot to add that if you really want to split to separate discs, Nero Recode has options to remove any files that you don't want to recode.
Kidmd, htats just the same as compression really. People say the re-encoding is better than compression, but at the end of the day, the size of the disc is smaller than it originally was, so it cant be as good. Picture quality will be lost in the Nero encode method!
Certainly there can be some loss of quality with any method of compression method, but using the latest Nero Recode I can't really tell this on any of my TVs. Not on the video itself, however the menus and some of the extras are compress much more than the actual movie, so the quality loss is seen there. Also, Nero Recode only compresses if needed to fit the movie onto one disc, so if someone wanted to divide a multi episode disc onto 2 DVD-Rs, this could be done with no compression.
However, since i view all my movies on a 60" screen, the loss of any more than 15% is very noticable on it. I really need to keep compression to a minimum, so i split episode discs up!
Would I be able to use dvd decrypter to copy down all the files on the disc. Copy the files again to a second dir(so you now have dir 1 and dir 2 with the full 8gig dvd) Burn all the files in dir 1 except the episode vobs 5-8, then burn dir 2 all the files except the vobs 1-4. That way (assuming that it will fit within each 4.7g disc) You retain all the extras and menus on both discs, but each disc has diff episodes.
Possibly, though not quite the way you suggested. The IFO file will not be correctly pointing to the second disc, since it will be on the first one . If you want extras, do a seperate disc with them.
Is there a guide for IFoedit to show me how to make the disc think there is no episdoe 5-7? Also how to rename 5-7 on the second disk, or would that be alot of work?
