How is this possible? I've been using AutoGK with DivX *non-pro*.

From the Official AutoGK FAQ (last modified on 25/09/05):

...and yet, that's exactly what I *have* been doing, for months now.

Is this going to cause some problem down the line? Am I to expect home player incompatibilities? The files AutoGK creates seem to play fine in Media Player Classic on my PC. And yet there it is, in black and white: I can't do what I've been doing.

I've gone with DivX 5.2.1 over Xvid because of the whole ESS/MTK/Sigma home player compatibility thing.

So, is the FAQ just outdated? Is DivX 5.2.1 Free Non-Pro fine to use with AutoGK? Can someone help clear this up for me? Thanks.

    Thanks a bunch. :)

Well presumably it works, you just don't get bframes. I don't really get why you didn't go with XviD. XviD is free and supports bframes.

I considered using Xvid. My player's a Philips DVP 642, so it should have no trouble playing xvid avis. But down the line I might switch players, or go to a friend's house, and didn't want to run into problems. ("What if mine supports ESS and theirs is MTK/Sigma?" etc.)

But now that I know you need DivX Pro...

Basically with ESS you are supporting the lowest common denominator. Essentially ESS just sets XviD to use a home theatre profile, same as what DivX uses. MTK/Sigma lets you enable some extra features that aren't part of DXN's profiles but are supported by the players such as CQM's (Custom Quant Matricies) and qpel. Also I added profiles with higher VBV settings, basically they allow for higher average bitrates and spikes than the default HT VBV settings. Not sure if AutoGK makes use of them or not though.
