I apologize in advance because I am a newbie when it comes to video formats.

How is it possible to take a 4+ gig DVD, rip it to the HD, then encode it into .mp4 and it comes out to be under 1 gig? Now please tell me quality is lost somewhere right? If so then I can understand. If not is it all about the compression or what?

My goal here is to understand this so that I can begin my task of backing up my entire DVD collection to a HD or multiple HD so that I will be able to play them via my media server.

I understand what your asking edif. Your media server is connected to your HTPC? I'd like to know the answer(s) as well. What would be the best method of taking a DVD and converting to [x] for playback through whatever Front-End software (MCE 2005, etc) ?
