    Hello,

I don't know if I post this thread correctly, but...
I have in my PC DVD-ROM and CD-RW drive.
I would like to put the third being DVD-RW.

    How do I do that?

In plain english please. With pic if possible.

    Thanks.

    Hi
Personally id replace the cdrw or dvd rom drive with the dvd writer and connect whichever one you took out via an enclosure unit (as long as youve got usb 2.0)Hope this helps

Forgto to add..........an enclosure unit is a box that the rom/writer can fit in to make it an external one.Added bonus of being portable too plus you can take the rom/writer out and put an internal ide hard drive in it to add files etc etc

I read somewhere that external DVD+-RW with USB 2.0 are slow if you know what I mean.

And that internal are better with faster reading and writing speeds.

    Tell me what you think.

Though there is another approach towards this, you can get a IDE Host Controller add it to another one of your PCI slots if you have any laying around and connect the extra IDE Cable to your preferred drive though I suggest leaving the DVDRW connected directly to the motherboard for better speeds and connecting the DVDROM drive to the host controller though note I never really tried this but I put mind to this and it should work some people do this to fill there drive slots on there Computer Cases, I'v done it before with SCSI(Hard as hell). Though for you IDE host controller would be somewhat of a good choice since you want to add more drives. But if you can you can use the secondary IDE 1 cable connected to your C: Hard drive and the extra connection left it should be right next to your C Hard Drive and use that to connect to your other drive. Its complicated so Imma see If making somewhat an image would be usefull.
~~Note- IDE means those Gray Cables that connect to the back of your Harddrive,DVDROM, and CDRW Devices.

    IDE 1 ---- Primary + C: Hard Drive
\-- Secondary + <<< Could be used to connect Drive>>>

    IDE 2 ---- Primary + DVD-ROM Drive
    \-- Secondary + CDRW Drive

Now what a Host Controller Does is this

    IDE 1 ---- Primary + C: Hard Drive
\-- Secondary + <<< Could be used to connect Drive>>>

    IDE 2 ---- Primary + DVD-ROM Drive
    \-- Secondary + CDRW Drive

    Host Controller
PCI SLOT- IDE 3 ----- Primary + (Extra Drive)
    \--- Secondary + (Extra Drive)

Note- Need a good power supply to do the PCI Host Controller thing, unless you have 400w or more.

Thanks for listening and I hope I helped. Oh and this is one technique people do to save money instead of wasting money on those towers.
Post back if you need any help.

    Hi!

I examined my PC and can tell you that
my DVD-ROM drive is connected to IDE 2 primary and
CD-RW through IDE 2 (which is secondary).

HDD is connected as primary with IDE 1, with secondary
    hanging in the air.

I hope I got this right... I never done this before...

I tried to connect my CD-ROM drive to see if it's going to work
to the one that hangs in the air (IDE 1 secondary), but then HDD isn't found on the system at all...
PC reboots and then I got message:
    Disc Boot Failed
    Booting from ATAPI CD-ROM...
    ...

I hope I explained this well for you to understand.

    What am I missing here?

Ok this is interesting, seems like the drive is interfering with the primary hard drive, I had problems as well with this. Now I want you to check if in the back of the CDRW Drive connected to IDE 1 secondary has a pin connected to slave. If not it could be Cable Select. It could be slave because it was currently connected with IDE 2 Secondary. This is somewhat something I do when I connect My drives.

IDE 1 ---- Primary + Hard Drive = Pin is on Master
\---Secondary + (Drive) = Pin is on Slave

IDE 2 ---- Primary + (Drive) = Pin is on Master
\---Secondary + (Drive) = Pin is on Slave

The Pin on the back looks like its connecting 2 little pins together you'll see it when you look on the back.

Usually it looks like this. CS stands for Cable select, SL stands for slave, and MA stands for Master.

    C|S|M
    S|L|A
    . . .
    . . .

Now every device has a sticker or label on top of them showing how pins are connected. The Hard Drive should be left alone in IDE 1 Primary and its 100% connected on Master. The IDE 1 secondary drive connected on Slave. As for IDE 2 primary on Master, and therefor IDE 2 on Slave.
But if the same problem persists that it wont boot then it could be that IDE 1 primary Hard drive uses lots of data transfer through the cable.
Now what im telling you is good for you cause you learning about how these devices are connected and how they work and then after a month you'll start to learn a lot more.
Post back if anything I'll be around. Or even try the DVD-Rom as IDE 1 secondary on slave. Just remember that Primary always goes Master and Secondary goes Slave.
Oh and another thing dont leave the hard drive hanging in the air cause thats the drive that has a metallic disc spinning inside so fast that it falling might cause it to get damaged. Just leave it somewhere you'll keep on eye on. But then again Post back if anything.

    Thank you for your help.

I've done it. I connected CD-ROM to primary slave and
    it's working...

I've actually decide to put another HDD to primary slave and
remove DVD-ROM and put DVD+-RW on its place.

    Thanks.

No problem man, here at afterdawn you'll get the support you need. And you learned something new about computers as well which is a bonus.

Yeah, I even added more RAM to PC so now it has 768 RAM and
    40 GB of more space...

Now I can use iTunes as a CD and mp3 collection tool.
I know that it isn't enough for 10000 songs, but still...

    (Above refers to Lethal_b).
