Okay so I have 5 kids, all of which have DS Lite's. I have replaced 3 of them with new cases, yunno those shock replacement cases, and all of them broke again. In fact, the replacement cases broke in more places and more easily than the Nintendo orginals. I've tried just about everything to fix them and finally found something that not only allowed me to easily repair the hinges but in all cases they are stronger than they were before!

Be warned. Once you apply this fix you will NOT be able to take apart the upper part of your DS for repairs.

You know that guy on TV, Billy Mays, he sells that stuff Mighty Putty, link , well I went to Home Depot and found the same thing on sale there. I think that it was Black and Decker brand but I'm not certain. I used that to seal the break on the ones that I still had the broken plastic pieces and get this, I made whole new hinges for the ones that were broken clean off. Its so easy since its just putty, you can mold it into any shape that you want. After it sets (about 45 min) you can then sand it to the exact shape that you need. It worked perfectly! On the DS's that were colored I just used a colored sharpie to color the white adhesive. It looks kinda ghetto but it worked great and it was super cheap! Much cheaper than buying a new ds case.
