I hope that I am posting this in the proper section.

I recently bought a dvd recorder so that I can burn television shows.

I have not yet set it up but I was planning on buying dvd-rw to record the shows.

However, some of these shows I may want to keep.

When I tape a show on my vcr I often set it to record a few minutes before the time that the show is scheduled to begin to make sure that I don’t miss anything.

However, if I keep this recording when I begin recording onto dvds I do not want to burn it on a regular dvd-r and have several minutes of wasted material at the beginning.

Therefore, I was planning on the following:

Use the dvdrecorder to burn on a dvd-rw and then using my computer to back-up the tv show onto a dvd-r and using that method to cut out the beginning stuff (such as using dvd shrink, which has an edit feature).

Has anyone done this? Is this the best/quickest/easiest way to do this?

I do this quite often .. You can use either DVD Shronk in ReAuthor mode (free) or NeroVisionExpress/Recode (common program) to do this ..

With Nero, you can even create menus if you're collecting episodes .. although I don't bother

Any decent DVD authoring program will allow you to combine your shows from different dvds onto a single -R. Personally, I use TMPGEnc DVD Author and, occasionally Nero Express. No problems combining different -RWs into a single -R.

I record several shows regularly. What I do is as soon as I record the show, I put it on my PC .. I then edit it with DVD Shrink and save it. When I get several weeks worth of shows, I combine them, shrink them to fit a +R 4.7GB disc, create an .iso image, then burn it with DVD Decrypter. I usually record them on a DVD+RW at 1 hr speed off of the cable so shrinking is necessary .. The PC seems to do a better quality job that way as opposed to recording at 2 or 4 hr.

As a side note .. I have used quite a few different Brands and makes of DVD+RW discs .. The ONLY discs that hold up to repeated use and satisfy my anal standards seem to be the Verbatim discs with mfg. code MKM A02 and MKM A03 .. All of the others seem to degrade much too fast as the get erased and reused ..The Verbs are well worth any extra cost you may encounter ...

you said as soon as they are done u edit them dvd shrink and save them. when u first save them before combinding them what do u save them as .ISO?

and after u have a lot of tv shows saved what do u use to combind them with because i thought that dvd shrink would only open one .ISO file at a time.

    thanks

I save them in my hard disc folder. After I combine them is when I convert the image to an .iso file .. DVD Decrypter can't burn it if it isn't an .iso image ...

    What Recorder do you have
It seems by your post that your recorder may have a HDD. Even if not and it only burns a + disk, can't you use + RW disk. Edit them on your recorder, and than ,if necessary take them to a PC and burn to a - disk. You can reuse the + RW disk. What do you mean by regular
    - R disks. Most players [ except in auto ] will play both - or +

I can see catfreek operation and feeling that a better result is in using a PC. I'm not sure that I can see any difference. Shrinking a program or series of programs, to me results in the same lesser bit rate, but I can get a lot of argument.

If this is your qoal, I refer back to my statement and why do you want them on a -R disk

I think that my recorder's manual says to use only minus dvds, but when i get home i will check and repost.

I have a Toshiba D-R2SU. The owners manual says that it can record onto DVD-RAM/R/RW. Elsewhere it also talks separately about recording onto DVD-RAM/RW and DVD-R and DVD-RW disks.

    Nowhere does it discuss DVD+RW.

Therefore, I am thinking that I have to use the "minus" disks rather than the "plus" disks.

OK it is a -R/RW recorder. Forget the + disks. I was thinking of my unit
I don't see why you can't do just what I said in my post, using
    - R/RW disks instead of the +R/RW disks.
The Toshiba site lists this recorder and the manual shows complete Edit features. Unless you want to use a PC I don't see why you have to

    [ Edit ]
If you did want to store a number of recordings for a time prior to editing. I guess using a PC would be the way to go. If so the posts by catfreek are what you should do. I assume that you are set up to do this
