I got this xbox used and am wondering if it's a paperweight. I know the hd is bad (makes a clicking noise), and I think that's probably the only problem. I have read the tutorials on installing new hd's, but I can't figure out how to get my eeprom.bin from the old hd because I can't get anything from the hd. Is there any way around this? Or is it possible to use another eeprom to lock the hd? Also, is there anything else on the old hd that I absolutely need to install a new hd? Thanks!!!
There is nothing on the old drive that you need.. unless it was modded it won't contain the eeprom.bin file anyway. There are 2 ways to attack this.. either stick a chip in it (borrow a solderless one and fit it temp) or this method to build a new drive http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/357863
Thanks, janrocks -- that tutorial has been a huge help! I've successfully built the eeprom reader, created the eeprom.bin, used xboxhdm to create the linux.iso, image burned it onto cd-r, and partitioned and formatted the new hd. After all that, I'm having the hardest time getting copies of the xbox system files for the c drive. The old drive is totally dead. I've tried extracting them from slayers evox 2.6 using simplexiso. I've tried twice to burn them onto a cd-r, then boot my pc from the linux.iso disk, but the linux.iso doesn't recognize the c drive files. I don't know if the files are corrupt, or important ones are missing, or I have to have M$ dashboard files, or I need to use a different type of disk (dvd-r?) or what. The files I extracted from from slayers include evoxdash.xbe and evox.ini Also, I don't know if this is important, but when I examined the xbox motherboard, I discovered that it had a mod chip. It looks like the one featured here http://www.gamegirladvance.com/archives/2003/04/09/mod_chip_chill.html I had planned to leave the chip out to simplify my task, but maybe I have to replace it? Will it matter for what I'm trying to do, or affect what system files I need? Thanks again for sharing your time and insight.
The matrix infinity is a good chip, never used them myself but.. If you have locked the xbox drive and have a working copy of the slayers dvd then boot the xbox with the disk in the drive, wait for slayers to boot and then do a full format and install. The chip will allow booting of an evox cd, so leave it where it is. I think that's the best course of action..burn the full slayers iso to a dvd-r and run it in the xbox.
