I need to move data off my HD, and I have one Application that is 5+ Gbytes (to large for a 4 Gibyte DVD and not valuable enough for a DVD9.

It won't compress small enough, so I would like to know what the best method is to archive this data on two DVD's ?

I COULD just start pull files willy-nilly until I get them separated into two "batches", but it seems to me that there should be a more "streamlined" method, hopefully one that has a self-extracting and file & directory structure rebuilding executable ?

Does such a program exist ?

    Thanks in advance,

    Billy B

    PS
I tried to put this thread in the forum that was most appropriate and would get the most/best qualified help. Please move it if there is a better place. Thanks again.

yeah winRAR's the best. pretty easy to use, you should't need a tutorial. install winRAR, then in my computer or windows explorer, right click on the file and select "add to archive", then select where you want to save it to, select a file name, select no compression, and then in the bottom left type in the file size you want it split into. simple as that...

    Thanks for the reply.

I tried to create a "stored" (no compression) archive of my 5+ Gbyte file into two pieces so that I could burn each piece to a separate DVD. WinRar will not stop the first piece at 2.5 Gbyte, like I set it.

The tutorial from the link says that it is "not recommended" to have the pieces larger than 50 Mbytes, so I assume there is some limit to how large the pieces are.

This seems to be a very involved and also very limited means to perform the simple act of archiving a large file to DVD. Is this really the only/most effective way to accomplish this task ?

If possible, I would like to use pieces larger than 50 Mbyte. What is the largest piece-size I can get away with ?

    Thanks in advance,

    Billy B.

    An Update:

In process of creating a "stored" archive of my 5 Gbyte file. Selected "5m" (@512 Mbytes) for the piece-size, and it seems to be working fine. (5 parts made so far.)

So I guess this is "adequate", but if anyone knows of a more efficient "fire & forget" method of doing this, I would be most-appreciative.

Seems like there ought to be a utility that would divide the file and burn it to CD in a self-extracting format, so that all you would have to do is click an icon on the (presumably first) DVD , select (or create) an extract/decompress directory, and then the self-extract utility would prompt you for when it was time to change the DVD (and tell you which one).

    (Bump)

Still hoping to find someone that knows a better way to transfer data to DVD so that it spans across "smoothly", and having it able to self-extract would be nice.

    Thanks in advance,

    Billy
