I have a HP Dv7 that came with a HDMI and VGA output. I was just wondering, as I found no documentation regarding it, if the computer having an HDMI output means it can support a high definition output. It doesn't have a Blu Ray player so thats why I'm asking.

My TV has two HDMI inputs and a VGA input, currently both HDMI inputs are used. I use the VGA for just having a bigger screen for extended use(I go to online college, its easier to see and read).

I was wondering if it would be worth while to buy a HDMI switcher so I can hook up my computer for movie watching from it or if the quality wouldn't be any better than that of the VGA.

HDMI is HD (High Definition Media Interface). VGA is almost as good (with a high quality cable), but it does not have the crisp blacks or the vibrant reds, greens, and blues of HDMI or DVI.

Good HDMI/DVI switchers do not reduce quality at all (some of the cheaper ones with low build quality do). Would it be worth it? Depends on how much money you have and how much you would use it. I am guessing that a high-quality, double-shielded, gold plated VGA cable would do almost as good (you would not be able to tell the difference without a side-by-side compairison).

Good enough for me, I have a good VGA cable that I use currently, I was just wondering if the HDMI would be any better. Not worried so much about the sound as I have a headphone jack type cable that I use with my Ipod and Surround sound so I can just hook that into the computer too. I use it quite frequently for movies(Netflix and such) but knowing that the VGA is almost as good is enough for me.

    Thanks for the quick reply!

I too have a DV7 with an HDMI output...with no Blu-ray, nor TV tuner. Can I still expect to get an HDMI output from my computer to my HP MD6580n?

It will output whatever is on your laptop screen to your other monitor.

Yes, it does support sound through the HDMI.
