OK, I did some movies using CLONEDVD2 and ANYDVD with no problems. The next day I went to do some others using NERO but when I went to burn it failed. Never had this type of problem before. I noticed Nero said "maximum" under burn option instead of the usual 8X so I took the disk out and replaced it. Both NERO and CLONEDVD2 ask for a recordible disk to be inserted now even though it's already in there. I checked for new firmware but it said the 1.33 version was up to date. Put an original movie in the drive but it couldn't play it. Yet it works fine for my son's Halo disk (cd). Is there an easy way to fix this? Is it something simple that I can do to get the computer to acknowledge this drive properly again? Any help would be appreciated. Also, there is a slight ticking noise when I put in the DVD's now so it might be the drive. I hope not but if so, anybody ever used/heard of the Comstar drives, there's one on for sale this week for $50 Canadian.

It sounds like your pc turned that dvd-rw drive into a cd-rw drive. Try this:

Go into device manager/cd-dvd rom-rw drives/open the tree to locate that HP burner/double click on it/click drives tab/uninstall/and reboot.

Now see if that drive will recognize any of the original or backups. One of my backups pcs does this occasionally.

I'm not familiar with clonedvd2,but I do have anydvd. Anydvd will pull off the encryption for nero, but the size of the original movie is a factor. Only a 1:1 copy.If it has to be compressed,I use dvd shrink which is free.

I am no fan of HP burners. Look at my sig. I have the 640c lightscribe and their backups are useless. I do use it to read and do the light scribing only!

Just ignore the ticking noises. It could be your media.

    ComStar drives?

Never even heard of them. Don't do like I did and buy a crappy burner. Stick with the big dogs like plextor/benq/Lite-on/Pioneer/Sony/and NEC.The main thing is use quality media.

Quality burners + quality media= faster burns, less issues, and higher compatabilty on stand alone players!!!!!!!!

What is the brand name/format/and burn speed of your blank dvd media?

Can you post a nero log?but remember to edit out the serial number which starts as: 1A23-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx or similar.

Thanks for the response Saugmon, firstly, I have no idea how to post a log from Nero, I had a look around and don't even know where it is. I don't think the problem has anything to do with the media since I am half way through a spindle and the disks work fine the day before. I usually use Maxell or Memorex as they seem good enough, not the best but I've never had problems with them through a couple of hundred burns at 4X speed. Onr thing I forgot to mention is that when I went to use Nero, my son was on the compter and he opened Nero through his sign in. Don't know if it means anything but when the burn failed, a dialog box opened off the taskbar stating "you have files ready to copy to CD". I am wondering if that somehow switched the signals up. Anyway, I'm back to work tomorrow and will check with an I.T. guy I know there. Question - if I uninstall the drive, do I need any original set up disks when I restart computer? I looked around and can't find them :( . I don't mind trying this but want to make sure I get it back. Another thought I had was to do a system restore but again I don't know where to go to do this or how to set the time to just before the problem.

    Again, thanks for the help.

    Nero Log:

Start/my computer- open up the hard drive that contains nero.
Program files/ahead/nero folder-Look for nero history and open it up. There may be many burn logs in there. Copy and paste them to your next post,1 or 2 of the logs-mainly a log from trying to burn a dvd.

Nero can be flaky. You may have to uninstall it,then download it again. If you do this and have nero6,use nero cleantool6 to completely rid all remnants of nero off your pc.

If you have windows xp,your pc will automatically hook that burner back up. Try this first. Other operating systems,I am not sure-you may have to use the drivers disc?

sorry for the delay Saugmon. I have since done the following:

uninstalled the drive and rebooted - no change.

Did a system restore back to before the last burn attempts - no change

physically checked connections and cleaned inside of computer - nothing

burned n audio cd - no problems with that.

The Nero log thing looks too big to worry about. I am going to uninstall Nero and try that. Do you have a link to the Nero cleanup tool (It's free I assume). I noticed that when trying with Imgburn, it tried and tried to recongize the blank DVD but eventually said there was no media there all the while there was the same clicking noise. When burning the cd - no clicking noise. I'm starting to think it is the burner. I'm not sure how they work, is there a different laser for the cd read and DVD? Anyway, I'll let you know how it turns out and thanks again.

OK, You un-installed your drive and rebooted and same thing.

Is that spindle of memosux or maxell?

Try picking up a small pack of maxell, and look at label to try to find the ones made in japan. Huge quality difference between Maxell and Memosux. You could have gotten a hold of a bad batch when you dug deeper into that spindle.

Saugmon, just updating you. I brought the burner back to futureshop since my wife was smart enough to buy an extended warranty birthday present a year and a half ago). They replaced it no questions asked. I was going to get a BenQ 1655 but they had none in stock so I settled for an LG double layer model which is working perfectly. This model is actually worth more than the original HP so I'm happy. Thanks again for the advice!!

Irish13: Congrats on the new LG. It should be a pretty good, quality drive. It also should have bitsetting capability to booktype the plus format to dvd-rom. Keep that in mind in case you run into a stand alone player/game console/or a pc drive that doesn't recognize those LG backups.

I think a dead benq or plextor is worth more than an HP burner, LOL
I just seen a dead plextor 916 go for $30 on EBAY! LOL

I've ordered a benq 1650 from canada. It should be a fine, booktyping burner.

    Good Luck and burn on!
