My dvd drive seems to have just stopped working. It was three days ago but now you can put a dvd into the trive and the green light on the front flashes for a few seconds & then goes out! I use Intervideo DVd 7 to play dvd,s & that is not doing anything either. Ripit keeps saying that there is no disc in the drive (but there is!!) My cd drive is working fine & as far as I can tell I have no virus's (I run Kaspersky). I am running XP, & have plenty of ram/drivespace. I have not downloaded or installed anything since it last worked so I do not understand why I am having this problem! I have run System Mechanic Pro 7 & Registry Mechanic & neither show anything wrong. I have tried to do a system restore but that also keeps failing even though I have tried a number of dates (to retore to) Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks Shado36

do you have a floppy drive on the computer & if so do you have or can get a win98 or winme bootdisk to see when boot off floppy with cd-rom support what is on a cd or a dvd in that drive? this will tell if the problem is with the drive or with windows.

Thanks for the reply. I also have a floppy drive & a cd drive, I hardly use the floppy at all but I know that the cd drive is ok. I have been "investigating" a bit & found out a few things that may/may not help in the diagnosis.

I troubleshot the (using the device manager) & it says that its working fine (but I can't even open the tray).

The drivers are all up to date.

The only time that it "does anything" is when my pc is being started/shut down then the light flashes (on the front)

I am begining to think that it may be a hardware problem?

that is why i suggest using a win98 or winme bootdisk with rom support to see when booted off bootdisk that it can read a disk or not. that will prove whether a hardware problem with the drive or software problem in windows.
