My son is in the Coast Guard and he and his family live in Mobile, Alabama. I heard from him early this morning and he had no electricity. I am now unable to contact him by phone, so am asking members to keep their fingers crossed. Parents still worry about their children no matter how old they get. Thanx To all other members who may be in the path of this hurricane I wish you luck and hope everything goes well for all of you.
Arniebear; just spotted your thread and wanted to let you know I am praying for the safety of your son and the many that are in the path of Katrina. I am sure your son is busy 24/7 in humanitarian efforts and not available nor have the means to call home. I salute your son (and his family) in their efforts to serve our country.
I too, am praying for your son and his family. You are right about children. No matter how old they get, you still worry about them.
Thanks to all of you for your concern. My son got down to his base and called in about a half hour ago, they all made it through. The yard is flooded, the streets are flooded, the kids pool is gone, trees down all over, no electricity or phone. He says he will probably loose the food in the fridge, and on military pay that is a loss. Had some damage to their house from water coming through the window seals, but they are all safe and that is what is important. They just moved to Mobile 2 months ago from NC and have had 2 hurricanes, they are getting a little frustrated but they will adapt. I hope that others make it through just as safely. Prayers can do wonders, so mine are with all the other victims.
@arniebear Glad to know your son and his family are alright. My niece lives in Mobile (just graduated from South Alabama). I was in college in MS when Camille came through in August '69. Could not believe such devestation and we were 60 miles from the coast. Was able to go down to the coast area about 2 weeks after Camille and it looked like someone had taken a knife and sliced everything to the ground for 2-3 block back from the ocean -- unbelievable. Anyway, glad they are safe.
Yeah, I remember the pics of Camille and the loss. My son was born in October of 69 so it is definitely a year I won't forget. Looks like my family is still not through with Katrina, her remnants are now headed toward Ohio and my county will probably have flooding, but nothing like those on the gulf coast.
@arniebear, friend I have your son and family in my prayers. I have been lifting up the whole situation with the Hurricane and those that are in the path. MovieDud
Arniebear: glad to hear your son and family is okay. It's odd how some of us have much in common. I was at Panama City FL when Camille went thru in '69 going thru ROTC summer camp at Tyndall AFB. We hunkered down in the barracks as the hurricaine barely missed us and ripped thru Biloxi and Mobile. I can remember the drive back home as I passed thru those areas...how devastating. I believe Katrina may have done more damage from what I have seen so far on TV.
Early reports look bad. They were saying in Mobile, they have the battleship Alabama in the harbor and they have real planes on display on pylons at the memorial site and the water lifted one of the planes off and sent it down the highway. Pretty scary.
If you are talking about that B-52D "Calamity Jane" in Memorial Park and moved it then that was some honking big storm surge.....
Glad to hear your son is alright. 1. your son was born the year of a hurricane and so was my brother, hurricane andrew to be precise, my brother is a hurricane himself. 2. i live in ohio too! franklin county, gahanna which is close to columbus, like 2 miles.
Good to hear they are safe arniebear :^) This hurricane is supposed to roll into Canada (Ontario) tonight. It is growing dark & stormy-lookin' right now, but no wind/rain yet. Hurricane Hazel rolled through Ontario in 1954 - hasn't been another one since. But Hazel made a helluva mess, so they tell me (oldtimers still talk about it). What's up Kinza? Did you guys get much rain/wind in Ohio? Damn, I better 'unplug' my whole computer repair lab tonight... Ya never know :^) Hey - if I fry my rig(s) does that mean I can buy newer faster stuff? LoL, doesn't sound so bad... But seriously, life is short & precious (and lives have been lost.) Best Regards
its been muggy and raining in ohio ever since katrina passed florida. still raining, i was totally drenched when i walked home from my bus stop today, its only a 2 minute walk too. whatever happened to surge protectors?
@kinza Gahanna is a a nice place, my daughter had an apt. then when she was attending Ohio State. Go Bucs @The_Oggs Been to Ontario several times, went up to Ottawa in 69, beautiful city. Nearly go wiped out on that skyway bridge outside of Toronto, never saw one that big in Ohio. You guys got the clearest water up there, no pollution. Yeah, its raining pretty heavy here in Northern Ohio were expecting 2 to 4 inches. I hear Columbus is not fairing any better.
cool, didn't think u would know such a small place. yeah, it's raining right now, i heard there's supposed to be 8 inches in ohio but u know how media exaggerates. funny. cnn said Katrina was going to be of "biblical comparison." im not saying that it wasn't severe, but if it was of "biblical comparison" then we wouldn't be alive after it
After looking at the destruction I definintely believe Mother Nature still rules. We cannot build things and think we can beat her. My son went out and bought a generator after he got home at 4 in the morning from the base, he said they were sending out helios all night long, and the crews stated it was too dark to see how bad things were and they were afraid of what they would find in the morning. They have brought in helios from NC, Miami, NYC, and Cape Cod to Mobile. New Orleans got helios coming in from Alaska to aid in Search and Rescue. The devestation is horrible. He was due back at 4 this afternoon to go out again.
Arniebear, I just came acroos this thread, and I just wanted to wish you my condulences, and I am glad to hear your family memembers are all doing ok. It is a very sad and disturbing thing to watch on the news and my heart and best wishes go out to everyone in Katrinas path. My prayers are with everyone.. Best wishes to all, Brent
