have any of you tried encoding vcd/svcd/dvd using the Didees's HVS matices or any custom made matrices out there ? just asking. cheers
I personally use a Matrix of my own for most of my Low bitrate encodeing...My Matrix allows be to get about 200 Minutes of Full D1 resolution Video on a DVD-R useing an average bitrate of about 2700kbs and the Quality is very good considering the Bitrate used...I also usually use CCE SP 2.67 for most of my encodeing useing this matrix....Cheers

Thanks for sharing those Minion. I'll have to try them out. You don't happen to know of any good web sites (or books) for understanding quantization matrices do you? I've gotten to the point where I understand a lot about MPEG encoding, but I feel like I'm missing the big picture not understanding them. I've looked at the matrices used by a lot of different DVDs, as well as various others for low bitrate encoding. It would be nice to actually understand the numbers. For example, your Intra matrix starts with 10 while I think every matrix I've looked at starts with 8. I find that interesting, but I'm not positive what the significance is.
Well Understanding Quantize Matrix is a Very difficult thing I don"t think I fully understand it either and what I do understand I find very hard to explain...The numbers represent the way that the Bitrate is distributed through the frame the way I got my Matrix wat takeing the Mpeg standard Matrix and changeing it slightly and then do encodeing experiments to see the results of the Changed Matrix and sometimes the Change was bad and sometimes the Change helped and I studied other Matrixes to see how they were set up and experiment with those and then try to transpose aspects of those matrixes into my own, If you have ever used CCE SP you might have noticed that it comes with a Wide variety of Different Matrixes and some of them are really quite good...The matrix is an Important Part of mpeg encodeing but not as Important as it might seem, as long as the encoder has a Standard Matrix available the Quality shouldn"t suffer and not all matrixes work well with all file types, The matrix that I posted only works really well on Progressive material that is being encoded useing a ZigZag scanning Pattern..(you should allways encode Interlaced material useing a Alternate Scanning pattern and a Zigzag pattern with progressive material)... I used to use CCE SP a lot and I've tested out different quite a few different matrices in it, but as I said, other than seeing patterns of numbers it didn't mean much to me. I don't use it much now because the copy I had belongs to a school I'm not currently working for, and they thought they needed to have it back. I still get in to use it occasionally, but lately I've been using CCE Basic at home. Unfortunately that means no custom matrix capabilities.
