My dvd burner is in dire need of medical assistance
I'm having problems with my Nero, Having been trouble free for a couple of years...
First of all it was coming up with a power callabration error ( cd's only ), Then it had changed to invalid block address.
Now it's saying 'No disc inserted or drive not ready, please try again.'
Having said that i just put a normal audio disc in it, Which it played. Put the blank disc in again and it's ok ( saying blank disc inserted )
But still coming up with invalid block address when i try to burn CD's.
The weird thing is burning DVD's is no problem.

I have nero oem 6.6.0.15, And my burner is _NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A.
I've been burning cd's trouble free for a couple of years now, And have been using the same grade a media.

Here's my log from the last failed attempt, Thanks to anyone who can help me :D

    @bacchus -

    - version 1.93 of your firmware is here - http://support.necsam.com/OEM/downloads/FlashFirmware/dl/NECND11_193.EXE

    - you're gonna have to start freeing up more memory prior to burns or your hard drive will be 'swapping'

    - hmmm... that first line triggered a crap media alert to me....

    - yup, firmware is either too old to recognise the discs/the discs are crap quality/or both. I saw you wrote you are 'using the same grade a media' however i'm reporting what the logfile sees

    - uninstall the packet writing software (InCD). To do that, you're gonna have to uninstall Nero, uninstall it completely via Nero's Clean Tools - " http://www.nero.com/en/Clean_Tools.html ", then install 6.6.0.15 WITHOUT installing inCD as it doesn't play well with standard Nero Burning Rom

Also, see throughout this thread - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/197820 someone had an NEC 1000A and another had an 1100A in there.

Another thing i remembered is this - http://herrie.org/upgrdr.html - Basically you could upgrade your drive very slightly, by changing it into an NEC 1300A. This would allow you to burn to -R discs, but only at 4.0x for DVD-R and 2.0x for DVD-RW discs.

But as your drive stands, it is only presently capable of burning to 4.0x DVD+R and 2.4x DVD+RW discs

[bold]Wow[/bold], Excellent reply with loads of details, Thanks very much for your post & links.
Question about the dvd firmware. I have a Fujitsu oem, And it says on the nec link for version 1.93 that i shouldnt use this if i am a fujitsu oem, Is that true ? Sorry if i should've said before.
I'm going to do what you said with nero now, And see if it helps.

    Thanks very much

now that is a quandary, i was going by the fact that yours is 1.91.

    See here - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=301

there, the 1.90 & 1.91 links are Fujitsu links, though the 1.93 is NEC, hmmm... i'm gonna ask for some help here and try to get someone to drop in.....

Hello bachhus, been reading your post and from what I have read if you indeed have a fujitsu OEM drive, the I believe the correct firmware for you is the 1.E4. If you have 1.93 to 1.A3 then that is for a true NEC 1100a otherwise you have to go with the OEM ver. Any firmware flashing is a risk, however without it the drive just continues having problems with recognition of media and speed.

Creaky gave you some good advice on the problems in your log, you can fix those and see if things improve, if not then I guess you will have to think about that firmware update. Good luck.

Thanks for your advice in this arniebear & creaky :-

[bold]firmware[/bold] - cant get 1.E4. (To quote the webpage - The requested file doesn´t exist.
The Webmaster was informed by email.) Can i break my burner trying 1.93 as it's not designed for oem fujitsu ?

[bold]freeing memory[/bold] - I've tried again with no progs running ( like i had before ) And still nothing, invalid block address again

[bold]crap media[/bold] - I've tried a friends and theres doesnt work for me either, but there cd might be crap too

[bold]packet writing[/bold] - Incd has been Nuked, using nero clean tools and re-installed nero 6.6.0.15 only

After re-installing nero, Now when i have a blank disk in (one of mine)it says -
No disc inserted or drive not ready, please try again -
With my friends cd it says blank disc inserted but still doesnt burn, invalid block address again.........

Do i smell a new burner on the horizon ??

An excellent question, since it does not want to burn your friends cd either. I have googled about this drive and have been unable to find the supposed update for fujitsu. It is almost as if it never existed or has been removed. Which leads me to believe it did not work out well. I found one other thread on AD that is a year and a half old where OEM 1100A drives were being discussed, it had a little info.

    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/67769

This drive is no longer being supported by NEC meaning there is no firmware updates, the last was the 1.93. You can always flash with the firmware and go back to 1.91 if it does not work out, however it is always a risk and only you can make that decision.

I own a NEC 1300A and it is over two years old, it is basically the same as the 1100A only it does +R/-R formats right now it is still working, but I know it is a matter of time before it dies of old age, I already bought it's replacement. Drives are pretty cheap you can pick up a dual layer at a very reasonable price, just make sure you do not get an OEM drive again.

    Yeah, No worries there.

I tried all the other firmwares and it was the same result. *Cries*
So thats it, My burner is now heading for the big recycle bin in the sky.
Thanks for all your help/time and input in this, Appreciated.

    Cheers :D

Sorry we could not get you burning again, but I hope everything works out for you in the future. There are lots of good dual layer burners out there at really reasonable prices. I remember when I bought my NEC I paid like 200.00 for it, now you can get one for 60.00. Good luck. :)

Is there any way i can get his firmware out of his machine and into mine ?
It's a last resort before it sees the bin :D
