When I try to defrag my HD I get this error "Disk Defragmenter has drtected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume: (L). Please run Chkdsk /f." And at every startup it goes through a disk scan...how can I stop this.
it looks like a blue & white box with a calender & clock on it as in win98sethat i use so presuming xp has that too
never mind, everything is normal that I can tell but when I look through it it only gives me the C: drive info
I still cant do anything, should I merge the partion L: and M: together? L and M were originaly a 160gb HD in which I partioned into 2 80gb HD, do you think this will work? I can defrag C: and M: but not L:
well I defraged it with another defrager program called raxco but it still does the disc check at startup *dunno*
Geestar20, you have to run the checkdisk from the Command Prompt. To get to Command Prompt, go to Start/Run and type in cmd.exe The Command Prompt will open. Then, in the Command Prompt box that opens, type in the following: chkdsk L: /f There are spaces between chkdsk and L and a space between the : and the /f. Once you have it typed in, hit the Enter key. This command will run a checkdisk on L, fix any problems, and you will be able to defrag normally. It will also stop the checkdisk at startup. Reboot, after you run the chkdsk.
HA! it worked -GrandpaBW- the funny thing was I tried that but didn't put the space between the : and the /f. it aslo somthing about it being mounted...whats that about? Also thanks -ddp- as I seen somthing I was looking for in the task schedular that I overlooked. Thanks everybody
Your first HD is device 0 and your second HD is device 1. On device 1 you have "mounted" drive "L" and "mounted" drive "M" as separate partitions on device 1.
You are welcome, Geestar20. Tried to post a reply, yesterday, but had to take off to babysit the grandkids, with my wife. I did not get back until today. (Had to drive 100 miles in a damned snow storm.) The message was taking forever to get posted, so I cancelled it. The servers seem to crawl, sometimes.
Hey guys, I know this is a pretty old post but I did a search on this topic and thought I might get some help since you guys seem to know your stuff (at least more than me). I'm getting this same error also- "Disk Defragmenter has drtected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume: (J). Please run Chkdsk /f." I tried the suggestion from GrandpaBW but I get that error that says "Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Chkdsk may run if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPEN HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (Y/N)" Do I answer yes? I have no idea what this means. Never had this problem before and didn't do anything different this time before trying to defrag. This HD is the one that has my movies on it so I'd prefer not to lose them. Thanks in advance.
Any suggestions anybody? Should I do that "dismount" thing? Will it screw anything up or will I lose anything on that hard drive?
Well, I don't know what happened but the problem went away. I didn't even have to do anything. Good enough for me!
Thanks, geestar. I have been busy as can be, today, and haven't dropped into the forums to check posts.
Everything seems to be working fine now but thanks anyway guys. I checked it again and was going to answer "yes" when prompted again but didn't need to. Seemed to have fixed itself I guess.
