    Hi,
Am unable to format the hard disk for a clean installation. I go up to start without cd support and when i press enter it brings A:\>. here I type " format C:" and it brings bad command error. I have used all letters other than c. It seems the computer is not seeing the hard disk.

when I look into the setup boot order the hard disk is not there. It is only cd rom, floppy disk and other network supported kinds.

    my computer specs

    Hp vectra vl420
    20 gd hard disk
    1.8 ghz
    256 mb

    am installing windows 98

    Please help!!

    Some questions:

Did you check all connections to and from the hard drive to make sure none are loose? Is the hard drive starting up with them machine? (Does it make noise or vibrate?)

Is your twenty gigabyte hard drive already setup with NTFS file system or FAT 32?

    Thanks.
I have been able to use FDISK and set the hard drive as active partition (one partition)and the pc shows me that it has 19664MB (Abt 20 GB)set to FAT 32. but the problem is now formating it. It does not allow me to type format c: at the A or C prompt. it says bad command or file name.

How do i manage from here.
