I want to add subtitles to an *,avi file. I prefer XivD but DivX is okay. All the subtitling programs seem to start an*.srt file and end with an *.ssa file. All the subtitle sites I have found seem to offer *.sub files. This strarting to look like a government project.
    How will it all end?

is there a way to add the subs to the movie file where you can turn the subtitles on/off while watching it?

If you've got a DivX file, there's a program floating out there that lets you mux subtitles into the file. If you've got any other .avi, all you have to do is name both the video and sub the same name (so "movie.avi" and "movie.srt") and most media players like VLC, BSPlayer, and MPC should be able to pick it up and let you toggle it on/off.
