First off... system is a Intel p4 3.0 on a Asus P4C800 deluxe. 2 gig of ram, 160 gig HD, 1 terabyte RAID array. Has a Soundmax (ac97) on-board sound card. I added a creative labs Audigy 2zs (but it's disabled... no optical out)
Os is Windows Media Center 2005 (all the current updates) and I have the Divx codec install (www.divx.com) and AC3filter installed.

The problem is, when I watch a divx/xvid tvshow with ac3 audio in Windows Media Player, it plays fine and outputs to my receiver fine. If I play the same file in the Divx player, it makes a terrible screeching noise! There's more. If i play a regular 2 channel divx file in Windows Media Player, there is no sound at all, but the file plays perfect in the Divx Player. The sound is being output on the Soundmax digital output (SPDIF)

your codecs's may not be complete and/or don't work with certain software make sure in the settings area of all your programs there configured to work with all file types.

get the xp codec pack or any other you prefer at wwww.free-codecs.com
