    Hello all;

I have been trolling these forums for some hours now and have come to realise what I need to burn DVD's BUT I have yet to make a decision on what burner to get.

Lite-On, NEC, and Plextor seem to be popular, but I don’t know much about them, and in truth all the numbers are like Swahili to me [smile] I’m a dummy about these things [/smile]

Now if the burner's just burn and do nothing more, what recommendations would AD give for the following requirements listed in order of important starting at number #1

    1. [bold]Quiet[/bold] (while playing DVD’s)
    2. [bold]Speed[/bold] (burning)
    3. [bold]Plays on most DVD Players[/bold] (If this is related to media type, what type?)

    1. Plextor are by far the quietest drives I've ever used.

    2. Burning anything past 8X is a fool's game so take your pick.

    3. Depends on the media and the particular player.

Like Nephilim said Plextor makes very quiet burners and rom drives. I like multi format dvd players the best cause they are fairly inexpensive and they play
all types of discs. I beleive ritek 4x is a good media choice as well.

Thank again, looks like im going for the Plextor. The Plextor PX-712A DVD±RW has some nice reviews but i have yet another question :)

I looked it up and there are
    PX-712A-BL
    PX-712A/SW
    PX-712A/SW-BL
    PX-712SA/SW

Now i think it is a safe guess for the "BL" to stand for Black, but as for the rest (SW and SA)i dont have a clue, im going to keep looking them up and trying to find reviews of value but if anyone knows please post.

[bold]UPDATE[/bold] I believe SA stands for SATA, now to learn what that is

    thanks

SATA, or Serial ATA, is a new type of interface that uses a smaller more efficient 7 pin cable that is dedicated to a single device per cable which eliminates some of the pitfalls associated with PATA which has been the standard for years. PATA, or Paralell ATA, uses a large flat 40 or 80 pin cable that allows up to two devices to be attatched to the same cable and requires the drives to set to Master or Slave via jumpers on the back of the drive.

If your motherboard has SATA support then I'd say go for the SATA drive.

Nice choice on the Plextor. They're one of the finest drives available :)

Thanks so much for the help. i have just ordered the PX-712A found it online for 100 bucks cheaper then Futureshop which is good since Canadian money does not go that far.

One last question for the PX-712A users, what media?
[bold]NOTE:[/bold]Burning encripted DVDs that will need to play on regular DVD players

The best media to try would be branded Ritek, Verbatim Metal AZO, Taiyo Yuden or Maxell. I've heard good things about Prodisc but haven't used them personally.

Ive used Prodisc and Ritek(Ridata) with excellent success.
Played movies on my PS2 dvd player, Toshiba, Cyberhome, Sony Psyc, and on a mac G4 computer.

Now if you want to get crazy, get an Epson R200 ($99.00) and it will print on the dvd'S. I get Prodisc 4x from www.supermediastore.com in block of 100 and they are .38 cents each

Ok, I'm in the same boat as ryunix. Regarding whether to buy a Plextor with a SATA or PATA interface. I'm really a newbie when it comes to what's inside my PC. The order specs for my PC state SATA, so I guess I answered my own question, right? Just want to make sure before making the investment. Also pondering whether to wait for the 716, and whether the same two choices will be available for the new model.

Also, any suggestions for the secondary DVD-ROM drive that I have? Since I burn a lot of CDs for my daughter, I'd like to replace it with a DVD-ROM/CDRW combo drive to take the load off the DVDRW drive.

One more question. I've never installed a drive before and the very thought of doing so scares me. What do you suggest? Should I leave it to an expert?

    Thanks in advance everyone.
