Here's the situtation. I have the worlds worst wireless modem router. We have a Mac, 2x PC's, and a laptop running from it. So naturally it always shits out (the net drops out for hours). Can you guys suggest a wireless modem-router which can handle our 8mbps conneciton speed and hold many devices. Tyvm.
if your connection speed is 8mb then any router with atleast that size is sufficient. just look at the routers speed. mind you, if you want to copy and paste files from computer to computer, then you'll need a heavy duty router. usually, a file copies and pastes around 5mb per second. which means to copy and paste from one computer to another one computer at optimum speed, you'll need a 54mbps router. but if you want the best, i know of a 256mb/s router. this also depends on the wireless card speeds inside the computers.
We've never even copied files. Just downloading heavily on each computer is enough. If we transferred files it would probably light fire. Note: I'm not fussed on the speed of file sharing, just it's capability of harsh downloading.
considering you internet speed is 8mbps, any router above that would be fine if you consider upgrading to a higher internet speed, then again, just make sure the router is atleast the speed of the total internet. to download to a single computer at 8mbps, the network card must also be 8mbps otherwise you won't the the max speed on it.
If anyone can find an answer to this, let us know. To my knowledge no modem/router exists that is capable of downloading at great speeds without having regular crashes.
what you mean sammorris? i can download at 10mbps through router, play network games and file transfer with no crashing of router or modem besides the fact when the internet provider is down.
Funnily enough the meek and mild BT Voyager 210 (stock firmware) can cope very well with obscene amount of uTorrenting, and never crashes
I'm pretty sure this is the modem my mate Nick has, and he says it's good for torrenting at high speeds, but has to be placed in a metal dish to act as a heatsink to stop it overheating... lmao
They do seem to run very hot, mine certainly does, when it was used for literally days on end downloading the entire internet it was tucked away down the back of other equipment with no decent airflow. It has a switch hanging off it due to the 210 only having a single ethernet port, and of course like most routers, when torrenting you don't get much of a usable connection on non-torrenting machines, but crash-wise, the router was always 100% stable. Brilliant especially as it was a freebie off an ISP to replace one of those horrid & crappy USB "modem's"
You know, I'm tempted to get one off ebay or somewhere based on that. 'downloading the entire internet' - haha, hope you've got lots of storage!
I used to have a really crummy 802.11g D-Link Router and my connection was horrible and I couldn't play Xbox live at the same time when someone was on a computer. So I bought this and it worked perfectly, if you have direct connection I DEFINITELY recommend this, it works great with wireless connections too, and if you really want it to go above and beyond you'd have to also add wireless-n pci/network card.
