Ok, First, Thank you for reading this. I need help in addressing an issue that is really starting to irritate me beyond all other things. I am having some real difficult times with my wireless internet connection. Would someone please take the time to walk through things with me and help me figure it out?? Ok, here is what I have. I rent a room in a house. The internet service is Roadrunner. The guy who owns the house has that modem in his room with the other things. He is using Netgear wgr14v5 router. I have a hp pavilion zd8000 notebook with broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN. The house is in a neighborhood where I am sure I am picking up signals from the neighbors too. I am having extreme difficulties keeping constant connection. It seems the Netgear rarely has a problem being connected to my laptop and the signal is always very good to excellent. But there has to be some configuration that is better than what I have. First, it is not secure. I have read and read and tried to figure out the WEP thing and hope the help I find will allow me to address all issues and finally have some relief. Most times, the signal will be lost, and I am not able to repair, change, fix, or do anything that will allow me to get back online. Since the setup is in their bedroom, when I get booted every night at 2 am, I am not able to go in a reset the modem and router. Last night was the first time I had received a notice that the dhcp was not able to set up a certificate. I think thats what it said. I had changed the settings to hopefully get the system to tell me more about why things were happening. Anyway, that would seem to me, there is some security feature run through his host computer that does not allow me to renew network connection/agreement etc. I know I said a lot, but I am sure something I didnt say was more important... Someone please help me out here. I am novice, not stupid. I have read everything there is to read, but there is something I am missing and I am more sure it is something that is basically not in my control even if I were to configure correctly. The guy I rent from thinks he is a wiz, but has no answers and has started to get mad when I say something about shitty internet service. So, if I can find someone who knows there stuff, I can go in their room in the day, when they are not there and verify what is said or needed to change. Of course, I will need to get approval or print out something to verify what I am saying so any changes do not affect his system, if I were to make them without his knowledge. Long, I know, but HELP!! Please!! Thank you so much!!! Mike
try manualy setting your ip, gateway and subnet check the lease time on the router as for wep it needs to be enabled in the router and the the same key entered at your end if there are multiple networks in your area running without wep is very foolish as anyone can easily access the internet and your system from the access point
