I have owned a all regions player for several years now, and wanted to make up back ups. The exact same company that sold me my ARP has a dual well, all regions and all the decription taken away. Their price this month it's on sale I have been watching it and I am almost convinced that this is what I have wanted since 1997. Take a look and tell me your opinion, its uder DVD Recorders, Iam intered in the more expensive one because of the PAL to PAL or NTSC to NTSC. The URL is http;//www.220-electronics.com they are a international shipper, for those yanks like me we can buy it in the state of IL, USA. The machine they furnished me in early 2001 was a JVC XVX500BK regions 1-6 with a manual switch for RCE and hardwired progressive scan. Device is played heavily & has never given any trouble whatsoever. They do the hard wired modifications then ship the units out from their factory. No one from the MPAA or any other agency has ever contacted me, I have about 80 R2(UK) and R4(AU)discs. So what do you think, I don't think these guys are going to wait for a double layer SONY with a dual well. BTW I have a Wide Screen (16 X 10)laptop and can't fit a drawer DVD recorder into it. :)

That's an awful lot of money seeing as you can buy a dual format dvd recorder for your computer for less than $100, and all the software you need to make backups are free. Also, since the standalone recorders simply take video input and compress it with mpeg2 to burn as dvds you will loose video quality and menus. In short, a computer dvd-burner is cheaper, faster (because that recorder can only go in realtime) and will yield better quality, more enjoyable backups than that standalone. Hell, you can by a really good tv-tuner card for your comp as well and have your computer serve all the functions of that thing and still save $300. Now, not to only look at it from my side, if you are unwilling or unable, due to computer specs, to use a computer dvd-burner, then that standalone player should be fine for your purposes, but before you make your purchase, I have a question/story: I too have a modded standalone dvd-player, I bought a chip for it for $20 that alows me to change between region 1 and 0, as well as remove macrovision protection. My question is: Does your modded standalone dvd player remove macrovision? because if it does then you may not need that expensive all region dvd-recorder. The only thought I have is perhaps a standard dvd-recorder might have problems recording your pal discs, however if you were to buy a dvd-recorder from a store you could test this and return it upon the instance of any problems, saving you the shipping fee's.

MSB no the JBC is not VCR friendly(macrovision), and we are talking about a slim notebook not a tower that you can put a DVD in a drawer. I have a CD-R,RW-DVD drive in my present almost brand new I-8500 from Dell,
also present is a 40 Gig Hard drive. My Dell is not region free and to put a 4X DVD+R option is $129, if buying a new laptop. I am crippled and can't do electronics work like I used to do. I like the idea that it will make backups of my Regions 1-8, not just NTSC R1. They did all the wiring and modifications and shipped me a Player, that I could watch any disc in the world with manual switching included. One thing they are not telling you is that part of the modification is ICOS (Intelligent Code Operating System) it will scale a PAL 2.35:1 to about what a anamorphic would look like, if it were in the USA. Not a true anamorphic, but for years I watched a very little blackness "The Final Countdown" while all were bitching about Pacific Family Entertainments big screw up, of not even having any chapters on the disc.

Now this gem comes along with all in the 2 well disc player/recorder that's region free also, and they pay the postage. They give you a few items like 15 free Discs, and patch cables, I will be using component REFERENCE and S-Video as I am really into Home Theater to view on my Wide Screen HDTV with a 39 inch diaginol, fully integrated with a line doubler. Your question is mine macro free, No is the answer just region free.:)
