If you are reading this can I please first thankyou!

I have been burning DVD's now for some time and have found all the help amazing so thanks for this too.

Two months ago I burned 200 disks with no problem, the next day nothing would burn. Each burn stopped after 1% and it came up with

    SCSI command aborted

I searched for guides and found out that my ASPI drivers were not working. Fixed these with the following help.

    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/89834

I have even gone as far as buying a new burner from a pioneer 106, upgrading to a 107!

I use a Dell D500 1.7Ghz 512ddr 30gig laptop running xp pro with the burner in an external case connected by usb 2 cable. used dvd shrink and nero to burn

Before you answer please be advised that this has worked for 200 dvds. one day it stopped working and has driven me mad since

    Steps so far,

    Updated al XP plugs
I bought the most expensive media
Tried various versions of nero and dvd x copy
    Re installed all software
ensured my dma is on rather than PIO
    still no joy.

I thought it must be the laptop so used my other laptop, a Sony Vaio 2.8ghz laptop 512ddr 40 gig laptop running on xp pro.

This burnt 3 disks fine then all the prolems re occured!

I bought a new burner and put it in the same case, same problem on both laptops!

So I thought it has to be the case and tried it in 3rd laptop and agin it worked fine (only tried once)

please help me or i may do something drastic, i have no idea about computers but learn fast! , below is the log

XP sometimes gets a clash between the scsi drivers and nero. -- Try this :- In Device Manager -- Delete The Master IDE Controller -- Reboot for XP to install ITS OWN GENERIC controller. -- Reboot again for Windows to recognize your drives.

Did you check if there was a newer driver available for your motherboard ? This Acer Lab ( ALi M5229 )driver is an oldie made for Windows 95 & Windows 98. ?

If you want a fresh copy of it -- it's available here :- http://www.storagedrivers.com/drivers/5/5231.htm

Do a search on the web -- ! Go to your motherboard manufacturer site and see what they have !

The link above is exactely that -- your present driver !

You have an old version of Nero installed ?

    Some ideas...

    1) Uninstall Nero, then go to your C:/Program Files/Ahead and erase that folder too...

    2) Uninstall any other burning application you might have, it could be a software conflict trying to use same drivers

    3) Run either RegCleaner or System Mechanic and clean all that junk lurking around your computer http://www.worldstart.com/weekly-download/archives/reg-cleaner4.3.htm

    4) Make sure you are free of Spyware

    5) Move up to Nero 6, your burner is pretty new so you might have better compatibility with newer version

    6) Finally if nothing else works you might have to format your C drive and begin from scratch

    7) Think of any software you might have installed that could have caused a problem

Let us know how it goes

Before you do anything make sure you have the cd with all the drivers for your computer's motherboard...

To start with, use a Windows 98 bootable floppy.... no Windows 98? Follow this link and go all the way to the bottom http://www.lordkor.com/downloads/downloads.htm

Pop the sucker in and make sure to set the BIOS to look for a floppy or have the floppy be your first booting device... Once it boots from the floppy then do the formatting from there by typing: FORMAT C: /U (it will erase everything)

Once you have this done then you can change BIOS again and have your CD-ROM as your first booting device, pop in the bootable XP PRO CD and follow instructions. I would go with NTFS as your file system.

Once done with installation you will have to use the Motherboard's CD with the drivers and go to "Device Manager" to install the drivers.

    That's all for now,
Let us know if you need help...

Hey Mark, I know exactly what you are talking about. I get the same exct message and I use an NEC dvd 2510 dual layer burner. Brand new. I have searched and asked everyone on this board and noone really knows what's going on. It seems to be affecting alot of people. The one thing that I haven't tried is durning to dvd +r. I can burn cd-r...read dvd's(except dvd-r movies)...play cd's. the drive works perfectly but for some reason it just stopped recognizing dvd-r media of all types. Try popping a dvd-r into your drive without shrink or nero even on and see if your drive recognizes it. I would say that it probably does not. I dont know how or why a drive can just stop recognizing one type of media but one of the senior members on here stated that the same thing happened to him when they tried to burn to a new dvd-r media. Since then his drive wont burn dvd-r anymore. I am at a loss and still try to figure it out everyday. It's not Nero, it's not shrink...it's not the scsi drivers... it's not the firmware....I have reformatted and rebooted more times than I care to admit but still I cant do dvd-r anymore.

Sounds like a firmware bug of some kind.

Hello Mark 1, Welcome to our little Club :)

I will venture to guess you are using the newest DVD Shrink, either version 3.2 OR ver. 3.2.68 -

If this is the case, I do have some interesting information for you -

After having spent a small time on DVD Shrink's beta testing team, about a week prior to the first release. The newest version of DVD Shrink is designed to work with Nero 6 Ultra Edition only. THE NEW DVD SHRINK DOES NOT SUPPORT NERO 5 OR NERO 5.5.

I don't know if you are aware but the new DVD Shrink also supports Dual-layered burners. :D)

Your other options, should you not wish to upgrade to Nero 6, are to use DVD Decrypter (free) OR Copy to DVD ($$$) as "automatic" burners. The Newest DVD Shrink is a drastic improvement over the 3.1.7 version but if you wish to get the benefits from the quality control features you'll have to sacrifice some time.

I've recently tested InterVideo DVDCopy 2 and found it be faster than anything I've seen to date with a fairly high quality product coming out the backdoor. You might just want to check it out –

    Cheers,

    Pete

    Pete,
Will using an older version of Nero cause his drive to act that flaky? Sounds kind of weird.

How much faster? How does it compare with Shrink /Nero combo for quality? Did you buy it or just use the trial?

If you still want to start out fresh with your computer. If you format your C: drive it WILL erase EVERYTHING on the drive. Then you insert your windows XP disc and follow the directions. You should use the NTFS. If you did a re-install of XP you still have "all the old crap"

The only problem that I see is it appears that your scsi is not comunicating with your system properly and it tries to make up for it with the buffer but can not go low enough to keeep pace. Are you sure your cables are good, maybe the external drive is not pluged in good in the enclosure, maybe the enclosure has bad connections.

thanks michigan, do you think for £20 its worth buying another usb cable and external box? is it worth going for a fire wire cable instead of usb 2?

I'm in the USA so I don't really know if that's a lot of cash. I use firewire not USB2 but I think they have similar tranfer rates.

Is it worth it? Well if it fixes the problem then, yes.

If it doesn't then..... Can you return it after you open it?

Hi to All! Landed here in search for the answer about my QSI CDRW/DVD SBW-242 drive/burner. Can't find info on whether this thing works with both plus and minus dvd format, or plus only. It can read "self-burned" plus dvds, but I'd need to buy a new bunch of it, and they (plus dvds) are difficult to find here. Does anyone know, would it work/burn/read minus dvd format, too? Thanks!

If you are using a USB 2.0 ENCLOSURE, ((especially one you bought yourself.)) Try picking up a Firewire one from newegg or someone else, and slap your drive in that, and give it a try.
USB 2.0 burners with factory enclosures work MOST of the time, but the aftermarket ones work about 40% of the time, at best. (most makers of USB 2.0 enclosures tell you that you can run Anything in it, EXCEPT for DVD BURNERS) dvd-rom, cd-rw, hard drives, etc..all are fine, but they have a problem with DVD burners for some reason. I don’t know WHY, I just know that it happens a LOT.
A pal of mine works at CompUSA, and they stock USB 2.0 external dvd burners, and he refuses to sell them to people, unless they simply INSIST on it. He says at LEAST 50% of them come back, and that is the FACTORY ones!!
I had a pioneer 07 installed in a USB 2.0 enclosure for a short time, and it worked fine. Then after about a dozen burns, the speed dropped from 8X, to 4X, to 2X..then it would not burn at all. I RMA’ed the drive, got a new one..same thing happened. I bought a new Firewire external enclosure, and shoved it in that, and it burns FINE.
So do what you want, but it has worked for me in the past. Firewire for SOME REASON..??..just works with external dvd BURNERS better than USB 2.0 does.
    Good luck to you.
