Being new to DVD backups before I go ahead a by a burner I needed to know whether my standalone dvd player will play DVD R discs.

I borrowed one from a friend - it worked.
Great, but how do I know whether its a + or - writable disc?

Can you tell from the by looking at the disc itself?

Can I use my PC to check? if so do I need software to do this?

    Cheers

Do a search on google for dvd identifier, you'll be directed to a site to dl a freeware which will tell you what it is. And also, most of the time, it'll say on the top surface of the media whether its + or -

Well on the disc you see "DVD-R" it is a DVD-R and if you see "DVD+R" it's a DVD+R!

Or simply ask your friend.....he/she may only have a single format burner, that way you will know for sure....

Go to www.dvdrhelp.com. Then section on player compatability. If your player model is listed it will show you what it can play (-R +R)orRW.
