I've been using dvdx to back up dvds successfully for a while now, but the program is starting to piss me off and keeps crashing now for some reason. So I did a lot of research about what else is out there and decided it was some of the free programs that are discussed on this forum. I also really like the idea of stripping out all of the stuff I don't need and fitting a movie on a single disc without compressing. The method I've been working with is:

    DVD Decrypter (ripping)
    IFOEdit & VOBrator (stripping)
    Nero 6 (burning)

Only problem is I can't make it work. The movie I'm working with has a bunch of VOBs that I get rid of by replacing them with fake NTSC VOB files from http://www.deano.dsl.pipex.com/backup/ifoedit.htm I then save them and update the ifos with get VTS sectors. After stripping the alternate audio tracks out using the guide from doom9 the movie is small enough to fit on one dvd-r.

When I try to burn though, nero says the VOBs don't match up. I even tried burning as a dvd rom and creating the video and audio folders manually, but it won't play in my dvd player.

Anyone have an idea of what I'm doing wrong?

Sounds like alot of buggering about to me.....

You will probably have better luck replacing dvd decrypter and ifoedit with just one program called Dvd Shrink.....

Dvd Shrink is available free in the downloads section here at afterdawn....

You can then visit http://www.chrismccann.co.uk for a really straight forward guide.....

Dvd Shrink can rip/strip/compress and produce dvd compliant authored files READY TO BURN....

As to your problem, if you are removing OR replacing VOBS (don't know why your replacing them) then the IFO and BUP files NEED to be rewritten in accordance with the new data....

The IFO is basically the directory of the relevant VOB set, so if you are just doing things to the vobs like removing subtitles, then the original IFO will be pointing at something that is not there and therefore has to be rewritten.....

In Ifoedit, you can create NEW IFO and BUP to match up with your new VOB set, however I think you may get mismatches within Ifoedit....

I would go down the Dvd Shrink route, and I think you will enjoy it's capabilities....

    Hope this helps.....

Thanks a lot for the reply. I used dvd shrink over the weekend and had some good success. I guess things have changed a lot since I last researched all of this (and that was only a few months ago)

The only thing I don't like about dvd shrink is that it won't let you strip out stuff you don't want unless you reauthor and strip everything except for the movie. I just maxed out the compression on everything I didn't want and killed all of the corresponding audio tracks but I'd like to just get rid of it all together. Is this easily done is another program such as DVD2ONE? If so, I'd consider paying for the software... Although dvd shrink is the most kick ass free program I've ever used.

Thats technology and innovation - the earth will be spinning quicker soon...LOL

What is it you actually want to keep for the backup - just the movie and audio?

I am not a Dvd Shrink user really, just had a play about with it really as I am used to and a fan of Dvd2one........basically cos it is easier to use and is quicker for me to backup the movie only using it......

Really easy to use - my process:

Dvd Decrypter - in FILE mode - tools/settings select movie only......this just highlights the IFO and VOBS for the movie......

    Dvd2one - variable compression/keep ac3 5.1 and DTS (if available) file size 4440Mb

Burn with Recordnow DX - as data....

Process from start to finish approx 45min - 1hr....

Burn speed at 4x with Pioneer 106 and Ritek GO4.......

I am surprised actually you can't strip out things you didn't want - as I thought you could.....

I did a Men Behaving Badly series 6 using Dvd Shrink while I was trialing it....

Got rid of everything except the episodes - just put it in the player and it plays each episode one after another each episode contains chapters, so I can chapter skip with it.........that was just by following the guide at that link I posted...

If you go directly to the re-authoring page at the link you can just drag over the main movie part.....

Then just tick what you want to keep - you can monitor the total file size with the bar, it will indicate all green when OK - then no compression can be selected, otherwise try the next level and so on.....

The link http://www.chrismccann.co.uk/DVD_Shrink_Re_Author.htm this should help you.....

    Any Q's just post....

http://www.dvd2one.com for more info on dvd2one

I may do the dvd2one trial, but I couldn't really find whether it offers the feature I want. I tried reauthoring in dvd shrink, but when you drag over the menu or extras, it reauthors them as titles. I didn't burn a disc like that, but I imagine that a menu played as a title would either do something weird or just be annoying. Basically I just want to keep the menu, movie and 1 extra which would fit uncompressed on a disc after I strip out the alternate audio tracks and other stuff.

It's possible to completely strip out stuff with IFOEdit, but I just couldn't figure it out and it's a big pain. I'm starting to wonder if any of the easy to use gui software has this ability yet. If not it sounds like someone will come out with it soon at the rate things are developing.
