ILO DVD Recorder versions

    I recently purchased an ILO DVD Recorder from my local Walmart. I've been using it to transfer all of my old VHS tapes to DVD.

    I recently had problems with the Macrovision falsley detecting "Protected Content" on home movies, so I found the latest firmware and did an update.

    However, while I was there, I noticed they have two versions of the DVDR04 model (451S and 813S). I have the 451S model (determined by looking at the serial number). Should I return this model and look for the 813S? Is it better? I really want quality since these are home movies. Are there more features?

    The only difference between the two is the burn speed of the DVD drive. The 451S is a 4x and the 813S is 8x. Other than that, the recorders are identical.

    If you are having problems backing up your tapes, go to my ILO firmware download page and get the hacked version of the newest firmware. It will disable MV, add an LP 3-hour record mode and set the recorder to region free.

    Thanks for the info. The firmware update solved my problem.

    One question though: When you record at SP instead of HQ, is there a noticible decrease in quality? I would like to fit more than one hour on a disc, but I don't want to sacrifice visual quality.

    the 2 hour setting would be the better choice. Try the 3 hour setting on a RW disk and see if you notice a difference

    I took your advice and did a test.

    Using the same videotape and VCR, I recorded the same show in HQ (1hr), SP (2hr) and LP (3hr). I recorded each on a Fuji DVD+RW disc.

    The results were a bit astonishing, and I'm confused on how this could be possible:

    HQ (1hr) - Doing a side by side comparison on HD tv, the video tape and the DVD looked exactly the same during playback.

    SP (2hr) - Doing a side by side comparision on HD tv, the video tape was much more clear and the DVD was hazy and grainy.

    LP (3hr) - Doing a side by side comparision on HD tv, the video tape and the DVD looked exactly the same during playback.

    How is that possible? If I start to use LP to record, when I build the DVD on my computer and add menus and such, will I loose the quality? It just doesn't seem like it should work that way.
