Should have a button on the remote called either, SIGNAL, VIDEO or INPUT to pick and choose a signal, try pressing that repeatedly, dependant of what you got plugged in and in which input, eventually you get a signal. The COMPOSITE input(the lowest quality) would be the yellow-red-white connection, it could be on the back, side or front of the TV, it varies between TVs, so if nothing's plugged in there, no signal.

What is hooked up, that you're trying to get a signal from?
    What brand and model tv?

Are you using regular cable/satellite connection? Are you using high def cable/satellite?

You just bought a new tv, and the remote doesn't work?

With some electronics now, you need the remote, to do some functions. I have a Gateway dvd recorder, and you MUST have the remote, to finalize a disc.
You need to be able to change the input of the tv. If there's not a button on front of the tv for "Input", it can probably only be done with the remote.

    You can check http://www.replacementremotes.com/store/index.cfm
and see if they have your remote.
