After I'm done backing up a DVD using either DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink and after removing the files that said software created, I've noticed that my hard drive free space does not go back to what it was before I started the process of backing up. I don't get back the 4.7 GB that the DVD contents took. Do either of these programs store files in any folder other than the one you specify? I'm puzzled by this. I'm not losing a couple of megs. I'm talking about a couple of GIGS! Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Hi coolvirus, To my knowledge, they only save files to location you pick. Most members make a special folder and name it so they don't loose the files like(dvd backup, dvd work,). Mine is movie temp. Once the backup is complete you know exactly where to go to delete the files. I always get the HD space back. I can't see why you are loosing the space if you are deleteing all the backup files. I do the same. My folder is called "DVD Contents" and I always drop all files there. But after all is done, I delete everything from that folder and yet I don't get all the free space back. It's scary because the more I backup DVDs, the more free space I lose.
Run a scandisc to remove lost file fragments and make sure space is being reported correctly. Have a look in the temp folder in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp (In XP) and empty it (it's hidden so you have to have show hidden files and folders set)
It wouldn't have anything to do with system restore would it? I did a system restore the other day and I think video files I had deleted came back. Just a guess- computer newbie, Frank
No, I did not do a system restore. Scandisk, yeah, that's a good idea. I ran defrag but not scandisk. Let me give that a try. Thanks.
I was just thinking of where those files might be after deletion. If you can restore them by performing a system restore, then they must be hiding somewhere. Can you find them by doing a search?
When I delete them I hit shift-delete so it doesn't send them to the recycle bin. They're supposed to get deleted permanently.
If you have Norton antivirus installed, purge the protected files. Right click trash bin and do your thing from there. Hope this helps. cheezzzz
