I'm so confused. There are SO many file formats and specific programs for each one. Now I have a .wmv file. I want to make it an avi so I can process it like an avi and burn it. Everything I have tried gives me an error, so obviously I'm not using the right program. This newbie needs guidance!

    Hi SLBeck
Just convert the wmv file to a dvd compliant format.
If you have Nero - Vision will do it - here's a guide for avi's but can be used for all file formats that Vision accepts - wmv is one of them.
    guide

Or here's a free one DixVtoDVD.
Set the standard to the tv format you're in - PAL for Europe etc, NTSC for US, Canada. Save to your hard drive then burn w/ your program of choice.

Then I must have a bad file. I tried that and got errors. I thought I was using the wrong program. Thanks. I'll download another copy.

Yeah it might be a bad file - I haven't come across errors like in converting downloads.
Your best bet is probably to get a new file.
