Ok, I've got two avi's (700 MB each) that I want to join into one....I tried VirtualDub after reading through the guides here....it said it couldn't do it because of different audio encoding rates....so where do I go from here? Is there some way to decode then re-encode using the same rates, then use virtualdub? Or is there something else I can use? All I want to do is have the two clips together "seamlessly" (as much as possible) and viewed by the dvd player as one continuous movie...is there another way, like using ImgBurn or something?

Thanks Mistycat...That's exactly the problem I was having...however, when I started headAC3he, it said "could not find data chunk" ?? So I continue on, and set everything like that thread said, then when I hit "start" I immediately get the "HeadAC3he has encountered a problem" error window...could I maybe accomplish the same thing by using TMPGEnc? The end result I'm looking for is to have one movie ready to burn to dvd, instead of 2 (or more) clips....

Do you have a DivX/Xvid compatible DVD Player?

I know my player that plays DivX/Xvid files will play 1 file right after the other without going to the menu. Even tho it is not 1 complete file it seems like it is because after the first part of the movie is done playing it starts the second part of the movie right away with no menu or selection.

If you do not have a compatible DVD player for DivX/Xvid then you will need to convert the files to DVD format. For this I would recommend ConvertXTODvd. You can add both parts of the movie into the program and convert to DVD compliant files. (make sure you select part 1 first then part 2 when adding the files. Or at least make sure part 1 is listed first or you will get part 2 playing first then part 1 last)

If you do have a compatible DivX/Xvid DVD player and just want 1 AVI file then try using WinAVI. Choose to make an AVI file and add the 2 AVI files into the project and choose to output 1 single file. It then should output an AVI file that is 1 complete file.

If you encode both files to mpg, TMPGEnc will join them for you and it will only take about 15 minutes. I have never used VirtualDub because of the errors I get but use TMPGEnc quite often. Open TMPGEnc, close to main window, open File>MPEG Tools>Merge and Cut. Now, add your files in the order you wish and select Browse, naming and saving what and where you want. Hit Run and you'll have 1 file inabout 15 minutes. Just make sure when you encode, neither takes more than 49 - 50% of the disc.

thanks again Misty...I got TMPGEnc now...Let me just make sure I'm heading in the right direction....1st encode the two avi's into mpeg's...I chose DVD-NTSC, but which audio? CBR or VBR? Linear PCM or MP2? Should I choose elementary streams, or no at this point? Then I can use the tools to join the two mpegs, correct? Then do I pick elementary streams if I didn't earlier? Or just stay away from them altogether? Then do I use ConvertXtoDVD to make the dvd files, TMPGEnc, or something else? Is there a way I can insert chapter markers? Man, my head is spinning like a top right now....lol

@larrylje - No I don't have a DivX/Xvid compatible player, and ConvertXtoDVD doesn't do it exactly how I want it...

OK, I don't encode with TMPGEnc but let's see. First, NTSC or PAL depending on your region. Basically, NTSC for North America and Japan, PAL for the rest of the world. Choose VBR MPEG 1 Layer ll audio, PCM is huge and takes up needed space. Don't choose elementary stream as that's no audio. ConvertXtoDVD (forget it with any other encoder) can't be used as it outputs an Audio_TS Folder and a Video_TS Folder and TMPGEnc won't recognize them. TMPGEnc outputs an mpg file that is joined and then authored for burning to DVD. This is where the vob files are created (as in VIDEO_TS)and TMPGEnc DVD Author can be used for chapter points, I assume. I don't use it either but there is a trial and guide here at AfterDawn. You will also need some sort of burning program, ImgBurn is good and also free. I was under the assumption you were familar with TMPGEnc and this may be too much effort for you to go to. TMPGEnc is very slow to convert, WinAAvi, as larrylje said, will also join files and encode to AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS files ready to burn but you won't have a menu and I'm not sure about your chapter points. It's very fast, too.

wow..I have done that countless times with both DVD santa, and nero vision, sometimes I would have to save to HDD instead of going straight to burn because I would have to choose DVD9 sometimes...but nero recode would always compress it to a 5..after the conversion. infact..I joined an Xvid with a Div, and one was VB and the other CB

The only reason I suggested ConvertXtoDVD is you can load the AVI files into the program and output a DVD compliant DVD. With chapters and a menu. You can choose between DVD5 or DVD9 size and add or keep subtitles or audio tracks the AVI files might have. Plus you can choose to burn the DVD after the conversion. The process is pretty quick as well.

I suggested using WinAVI if he wanted to keep them as an AVI file but joined into 1 file. (Playing it with a Xvid/DivX complient DVD player)

Either of the programs above does not use TMPGEnc.

But if you are wanting to add the 2 AVI files together and make a DVD compliant DVD then I would suggest using ConvertXTODvd. Below is a guide that shows you how to use the program...
