Hey everyone. I've managed to soft mod my Xbox today but I'm having the worst time ever trying to figure out how to download junk from my PC to my Xbox. I think I've managed to read every tutorial on this site, but nobody seems to get descriptive enough for me on how to physically set up the connections between a computer and an Xbox. I have an Emachines computer, model W4885, that was bought at Walmart. I purchased, what I believe, is a used, crossover cable at Gamestop for a $1.99. Both ends of the cable can be connected to my Xbox, so I'm not sure if that is actually a crossover cable or not. Anyway, I plugged one end to my Xbox and the other end to the only spot on the back of my computer where it will fit. Here's two pictures of what I've got going on right now. http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/7058/101206001ly2.jpg http://img82.imageshack.us/img82/6669/101206002gu1.jpg I've tried the Windows Explorer FAQ that is stickied and also the FlashFXP program, but I'm getting no results from either one. By the way, I'm running on Windows XP. My IP address is 192.168.0.100 and I've been using "xbox" as my login and password so I don't have a clue what I might be doing wrong here. Also, on my Network Settings in my Xbox Mod it states that my "Current IP" is "No Link" Please help me. I used to have DSL internet so I'm wondering if I need to install some new software so that my computer knows to FTP from the back and not from the front where there's a USB slot. Please talk to me like I'm a retarded gorilla and include either pictures or links or draw me a picture using crayons because I'm obviously a stupid idiot. / I swear, anyone that helps me out on this, I'll personally write a song about you. ) Thanks.
you seem descriptive enough to be smarter than a retarded gorilla. Alright, you aren't sure if your cable is a crossover, because it's not working, it's probably an ethernet cord. But before you go getting ethernet cords, make sure your firewall isn't blocking the connection, if it is, shut it off. Now, since you probably have an ethernet cord, you will need a router and another ethernet cord. Or you could just get an assured crossover cable. 1.Using an ethernet cord Router Hook both ethernets into port 1 and port 2 of the router.(If there is a port that says WAN, do not put a cord in there.) Put the cord from port 1 to your xbox and port 2 to your computer. Your computer should recognize that it has been connected to. Now turn on your xbox and go to current IP, use that IP for your FTP. 2. Crossover cable Basically, the same setup you have now.
Hey, thanks for the great response xxteakxx. Here's a little more info from my last post. The cable I purchased at Gamestop is labled "XBOX Link Cable <Any-Used>" on the packaging. I have that directly connected to my Xbox and the only place where it will fit in the back of my PC. If the guy there sold me the wrong cord, I swear, I'm going to throw rocks at him when he's not looking. ) I do have that yellow cable you pictured, it's called a "Cat .5 Patch Cable UTP' labled directly on the cord. I used that cable back when I had DSL internet but since I've moved to a house where DSL is not available in my area, I'm only using Dial-up. I do have the firewall that came with the computer turned off. I really don't want to go out and purchase a router since that's only going to confuse me even more and since I have dial-up, I see no reason to own a router. Is there a link to physically walk me through the set up on how to get my PC and Xbox to talk to eachother? I think once I have that all set, I should be good on my own from there. Thanks again.
Here is a fool proof way to tell if you have a crossover cable..... Hold your Yellow cable ends side by side. Now look at the color pairs of wires. You should be able to see them through the connectors. If the the colors (pairs) are the same ie... on one end you have: green------------> blue-----------> black, and on the other green------------> blue-----------> black, you have a standard cat 5 cable. If the colors are: green------------> blue-----------> black, on one end, and green------------> black-----------> blue, on the other, then you have a crossover cable. As in the pairs are crossed. Keep in mind the colors I used are just examples.
Out of curiosity in the modded dash did you goto system and change the network settings to DHCP? cuz thats what was wrong with mine for like 2 months.
There seems to be so many different guides out there. The one I read told me to change the Network Settings on the XBox dash to static, which I did already. I did the fool proof method to check both my cables and on both ends they pair up exactly the same so I'm heading over to Best Buy right now. I think I might also know what another problem is that I'm experiencing, but it means nothing to me since I don't understand computers all too well. Here's what I'm thinking... In my Device Manager under System Settings it shows that I have a Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC for my Network Adapter (No Yellow Splash so it's been installed correctly). However, under my Network Connections, just below the "LAN or High-Speed Internet" it shows a red "X" over a picture of two computers and it states... Local Area Connection Network cable unplugged, Fire... Realtek RTL8139/810x Family... I can't tell what it states after the "..." because it won't show it, and if I try to rename it, most of the filename gets truncated. Am I on to something here or am I just speaking Sputnik? Thanks again guys, you all have become my personal hero. )
I think this is either because you have the wrong cable inserted into the Ethernet port, or you have not "Enabled" the connection. Right click on the 2 computer icons you described and see if you can enable the connection. If it says disable, then it might just be the cord.
Well gentlemen, I finally got XBMC running on my Xbox all thanks to xxteakxx and JXP2307! I can't believe it only took me 13 tries to install it. ) Oh, and it turns out that having it in STATIC mode did actually work for me rather than DHCP. Go figure. Okay, well this should be the very last of my questions. I appreciate the help so far. Just get me to the end here and it will be champagne and fireworks for me tonight. So here's my three questions. 1. When running XBMC, I'll click on "My Programs", and then Emulators. All I see is a blank Icon. I would like to have a thumbnail and a link to where my one Emulator is on the Xbox harddrive. My emulator is in the folder E:/emus/Super Nintendo/default.xbe on the hard drive. Should I have physically placed it somewhere else? Anyway, I'm reading the online manual for XBMC and that all I need to do is create an XML file with a CUT extension, but that's complete gibberish to me. It's written as though those file extensions should mean something to me or that I even know how to create a XML file, but it don't have a clue. Could I get a specific walkthrough on this? If you could really dummy it down to just a couple of simple point and click things that needs to be done or typed, that would be awesome. 2. I would like to use Windows Explorer to FTP back and forth from my Xbox to PC. However, when I follow the stickied guide on this forum, it doesn't work for me. I believe it's trying to connect to that address through my dial-up phone line and not my Crossover Cable. Is there some way to have Explorer only run my FTP connection through my Ethernet card? I hope I'm making sense on this question I'm asking. 3. This one should be simple. When I first run XSnesX, I would like to change the background on the screen where it shows all of the roms that were found on the harddrive. The emulator came with other skins but all I can do is view them as a pictures, not implement them in game as the background I'm hoping to use them for. I give up, what am I missing here? I'm pretty sure that this should be the last of all of my questions. Thanks a bunch. And if any of you are in the Lansing, Michigan area, I promise to help get you drunk if you ever stop by. )
You want to use windows to FTP? Try out my Picture tut!!!!!!!! Post on my thread whether it worked for you.
Wow!!! That's a wicked awesome pictured tutorial you made, JXP2307!!!! I think even retards and small farm animals could follow such a great walk through. I wish more people would make tutorials and guides like that for guys like me who usually doesn't get it. And no, I'm not talking about my sex life. ) Hey, thanks again. I was able to figure out question #2 and #3 on my own so I should be good from here on out. Joy! )
Oops, I meant to say that I figured out question #1 and #3 on my own even though it took me over a day of rifling through the internet to find my answers. I wasn't able to understand the whole Explorer Windows FTP thingie without your guide though. Okay. So thanks again. And if I have any more further questions, I know that you guys are the place to come to. )
