Hey... I'd be classified as a newbie, but rest assured that I've tried to find the solution to my problems elswhere before bothering you all here. Here's the problem. Lately the videos that I download are displayed incorrectly (i.e. the incorrect aspect ratio) when I play them back in wmp 9. The file properties show the proper widescreen ratio, but when I use wmp, powerDVD, or ATI player, they all display at 4:3. RealOne player is the only one that seems to get the sizing right. Up until now I've been happy to use it, but after messing with xvid codecs (to solve the green blocky problem) I can only get sound with no video out of realOne for clips encoded with the xvid codec. All other players have sound and video, but the ratios are incorrect. I've looked all over the place for people with similar problems, but haven't found anything helpful. Hey Drew, sorry i didnt respond earlier. This seems to me like a codec problem, could you tell me what codecs you have installed?
First, thanks for the response... It's greatly appreciated. Let's see. I've been doing a lot of uninstalling and reinstalling my codecs lately to resolve conflicts, but this problem with the aspect ratio seems to be staying constant. Right now I have the most current Nimo codec pack installed, but i also have a copy of Divx 5.02 pro, and the most current xvid build (nic's, I think). In the last day or so I've uninstalled everything and reinstalled the nimo pack all by itself. (I used all the standard install options and added directshow support and some additional audio codecs) As a side note, I also did a complete reinstall of windows xp to get rid of wmp9, and that didn't help either. This seems to have solved the problem for xvid encoded videos in Realone player, but all clips still fail to display in letterbox format on any other player. So in summary, I seem to have rigged it well enough to play 99% of the clips I want to view. If you have a suggestion, I'll try it though. I'd really like to know why the other players don't recognize the aspect ratio. I agree that it sounds like a codec problem, but I don't see how it could be any of the major codecs since I've had them all in and out over the last few days. My best guess is that it's something old that was installed long ago that can't be removed easily. Thanks again for your time, Dela... Drew
You said you have the nimo codec pack installed. I hate codec packs. They cause nothing but problems really! these are the codecs that i installed and i have no problems at all so far, DivX ;-) MPEG4 Codec release 3.11 alpha xVid Codec (Vite) Tmd Codec (just in case i need it at some stage) Divx Ac3 Codec xVid Ac3 Codec Radium Mp3 Codec Probably have more but I can't think of em right now, lol.
Yeah, I've always had the same feeling about codec packs, but in this instance it seems to have done the trick. I've had all those individual codecs you listed and more... It's crazy that I haven't been able to find anyone else who has had this problem. Oh well, I guess it's a moot point anyway considering that I'm getting all the clips to work with realone player. I think that i'll do some testing on a fresh system... Maybe I can figure out how to create that problem on a fresh machine... That should get me one step closer to reversing it. Yep, get the latest version of the Xvid codec, uninstall the one you already have, then reinstall the new one. That did the trick for me. If that doesn't work, try uninstalling any codec "packs" you might have. Dela was right when she said that they can cause problems... Particularly when you install one of them over the xvid codec. Thanks, but I had already tried that. I have tried the latest stable and expiremental builds by nic, koepi and vite both with and without the latest build of the Nimo codec pack installed. Everything has the same green blocky problem... Any other suggestions? thanks, elrog
I've read about a lot of people who have had this problem... And found several different solutions. Some got it to work with a simple reinstall of the xvid codec. Others updated the directshow filters and that did it. It sounds like you have already tried several different combinations. I hate to say this but the only other remedy I can think of is to uninstall all codecs (and by this I mean everything that you can) and then reinstall again one at a time, starting with xvid. Try playing the clip each time you install a new codec. I'm not suggesting this because I've seen it work, but only because theoretically with a clean codec list there should be no (or at least fewer) conflicts. If you do find something that works post it here, please. I'd like to know. Sorry I couldn't be more help... Drew
Dela, I have tried the latest xVid codec from vite and it didn't work... I don't know what to tell ya, but thanks for the input. I was thinking about uninstalling and reinstalling all of my video codecs and probably even playback software just in case, but that would take some time and I go back to college in a few days and won't have to deal with this computer once I do. thanks for the help all, elrog
