Ok... my lite-on sohw 1213 internal dvd/cd player/burner is not working. Somthing about bad/missing driver. Tried to download from liteon but says XP doesnt need to download driver. Ive done the uninstlall and reinstall in device manager. Basically i'm just wanting to get a new DVD player. My question basically is what is the differance between a dvd BURNER and a dvd ROM? I want to burn cd's, dvd's, and also just be able to just insert a disc and have windows be able to read it and copy files like a standard preinstalled one. Any suggestions on what brand/model i should check out, or what i may specifically need???? also are they hard to install or should i have a computer store do it? Im somewhat technally inclined but never installed or messed with burners much. Thanks a lot, any help is appreciated. Spen
I had a look and found this.. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/303074 seems to have most everything about this problem..
DVD Rom only plays DVD's, can not burn them. DVD Burners can do both along with burning and playing CD's. so you might as well get that.
Thanks, that ansers that... Now the question is basically, if my computer is not "seeing" reconizing my dvd burner or driver, then if i install a new one should I be ok? I know one doesnt have to do with the other, but i just dont want to buy a dvd burner and have it happen again from a Operating system XP problem. Any Thoughts? Thanks again
Try a spare hdd or cdrom on the cables first, if the pc finds it all the cables and mobo check out ok..Check that the IDE is enabled in the bios (my old dell needs this)..Try the drive in another pc if you can..then if it all fails buy a new burner... I thought a lot of old drives were dead, turned out to be the IDE controller chip on the Motherboard...have you had any errors like "The disk is not iso9660 or High Sierra format"? Oh I forgot..update your anti-virus and do a full system scan before anything else..
Thanks, but i definatly found out its not my dvd burner. I went and bought an external burner, and it will not install either. I get this message Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39) I have uninstalled and reinstalled both drives through the device manager to no avail. I know for sure its not any virus or spyware or anything, at least im pretty sure. I have multiple anti spyware and virus that are always kept up to date. Also i tried to go to Liteon's site to try to download a driver, but there is no driver and again I'm prety sure its not the burner thats the problem. Anyone know how to update or fix driver problems with windows XP? I seriously just want to format the pc and reload windows, but how can i do that when no disc will play on ANY cd/dvd player? This sucks.
Thanks bro, I will try that, but Im going to get all my stuff onto an external HD first. As far as you know, as long as i set my bios to boot from a cd, then the xp cd should run even though the problem is that no cd's/dvd's are recognized? Thanks for the help man, I apreciate it... Spen
sohw 1213...there isn't a driver for xp on the lite-on site..( I think they are nasty things anyway NEC4550 all the way) but that doesn't mean I won't try to get it going..This is a problem with xp..it won't detect any drives properly..something in the system32 folder has gone wrong (dll-hell!) Dont worry, the bios will find the drives..The driver is built into the hardware!!otherwise how can you ever get an operating system on in the first place...It's things like soundcards and graphics that need drivers these days..not dvd drives..ide optical drives have been supported by hardware drivers since about 1995, and all motherboard makers from 1998 onwards..you could plug that drive into a pentium133 from 1996/7 and it would boot cd's from the bios straight off!! Fact..I have one that does with a toshiba cd writer/dvd rom combo and that's a funky drive if there ever was one.. Back up everything but windows folder..then format the drive and re-install with everything connected..that'll fix it..It's so common for xp to mess up it's amazing M$ stay in business
Hey thanks for all your help but i actually fixed it! I got a link from another fourm. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/en-us and it had me edit some registry keys and BAM, its all good. Im pumped. So thanks again but its all good. I appreciate all your help, and you may want to check out that link if you ever have a problem. I guess it was because i unilstalled nero 6 and apparenty that can jack you up when you remove certain cd/dvd programs. anyhoo... peace!
Cool..I'm sort of wary of going anywhere near M$ what with this xp sitting on longhorn foundations...
