I have been using the internet for a while but have yet to have a service provider at my home. I have many myths about the internet that I need cleared up. I would very much appreciate it. I'm an averager user who loves forums, searching for normal stuff on the net, frequenting my favorite sites, I'm a college student who need to do research at times on the net and sometimes needs to check up her grades on it, I do not plan on putting up a website or anything like that anytime soon, I fear downloading things so I try not to but I still do somtimes (mostly Japanese unlicensed manga and clips from concerts). What exactly is the safest internet provider and why? If you download onto a cd-rom from another computer and then use the cd-rom on your own computer are you at risk of being caught? I ask this because I occasionaly download nonlicensed new anime. Does a high speed connection always remain on? If it does doesn't the chance of your files such as writings or downloads run at a highwer risk of being found and distributed? What's with the whole IP address that changes frequently everytime you log on with normal phone connection (non-broadband) internet. Is that truly safer than dsl? I have much more questions but I'll just ask those for now.
"What exactly is the safest internet provider and why?" Hi, look for a local service provider. They are usually small based companies some internet providers are run from independent PC stores under and independent name, they offer better service than some of the biggest service providers, this is because you dont have the Hours of waiting time when you have a technical fault, they offer one on one assistance because they have small client bases, and the CEO is usually the owner of the store so very easy to get hold of. So yeah try looking for a local service provider who offer better service than some of the biggest service providers, also look at the charges youll be suprised at how cheap some of them can be. One in my local area offered free connection for the 1st month. They also offer good protection on your connection because they will listen to you and to what you want, also i would persume hackers won't target small local service providers. But of course get a good ant-virus software e.g. Norton "If you download onto a cd-rom from another computer and then use the cd-rom on your own computer are you at risk of being caught? I ask this because I occasionaly download nonlicensed new anime." Usually if it's games you get caught alot easier than if it is pictures or a film, this is because the game is installed onto your PC, whereas film and photos are never installed on your computer (if only viewed from disc never copied to PC) but if you do copy these files to your PC you can get software which can hide such files. "Does a high speed connection always remain on? If it does doesn't the chance of your files such as writings or downloads run at a highwer risk of being found and distributed?" Yeah, broadband stays on all the time, if connected to the PC, and the most obviouse way that your files can be distributed is through Peer2Peer, but that will only happen if you are stupid enough to put your files in the Peer2Peer software "Shared files" folder. Such Peer2Peer clients are Bearshare and Limewire, of course though hackers can get to your files easy enough so make sure you have a goos Firewall. Also avoid using Peer2Peer clients, if you must use one then get Limeware, it is the most secure and comes without Ad-ware. "What's with the whole IP address that changes frequently everytime you log on with normal phone connection (non-broadband) internet. Is that truly safer than dsl?" Yeah, more secure because if you are beeing hacked then the hacker loses you when your I.P changes, but DSL is in noway insecure, in my opinion, as long as you get good firewall and ant-virus software. Also, dont download too much Un-liscensed software, they can seem genuine then two weeks later they hit you with a hidden timed TROJAN!!! Ask more questions if you want i'll answer best i can Sorry if anything is wrong, i'm not an expert. but i hope that helps you mate
Thanks for your very nice response. About the virus protection part. I'm sure whether to go for Norton of McAfee. I'll have to read up on them. "Usually if it's games you get caught alot easier than if it is pictures or a film, this is because the game is installed onto your PC, whereas film and photos are never installed on your computer (if only viewed from disc never copied to PC) but if you do copy these files to your PC you can get software which can hide such files." You know what's interesting though? I downloaded an anime into a cd-rom a while ago and I noticed it later that one of the episodes was recorded in My Videos (I think). I had not saved it at least not with my knowledge. Also, on The Real Player which it's for someof the episodes I had watched were still watchable (if you just click on the title in the dropdown menu) even without the cd-rom on! "Also, dont download too much Un-liscensed software, they can seem genuine then two weeks later they hit you with a hidden timed TROJAN!!!" I'm not a gamer by the way so no problem there, and the stuff I download is through direct links not bittorent or the like. So I don't have any troubles with that, correct? I have not ever downloaded anything that has to do with peer2peer, bearshare or limeware. So I'm safe right? None of that can install on it's own. What do you mean by Shared Folder anyway. The one on My Computer in the desktop?
internet security has less to do with the provider as it has to do with you. the protection that AOL or MSN offer with their service is seldom used in the first place. most people rely on their own anti-virus and anti-spyware programs that they installed themselves. a good anti-virus program that is also free is AVG anti-virus. here is a link to it http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2 .it is updated freqeuntly. and a good anti- spyware is msn anti-spyware. its not the best but its good and its free. sorry i dont have a link right now. so basically you would provide your own protection because the provider is gonna ask you which site you were on and what were you downloading if you lodge a complaint about their security. and if you dont want anyone knowing your personal business then dont worry about service providers protection and get your own.
