My internet seems to be working fine on the xbox 360 and PS3 but on my computer internet pages will never load first time, sometimes I have to refresh a page 10 times for it to load. The only website that works first sometimes is google. I tried a system restore to when it was fine but that didn’t fix the problem. I then did an avg virus scan, which found nothing. I have no clue what to do to fix this problem, any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.
Let’s have a look/see and hopefully determine what your problem is. First Step: Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop. • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it. • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis. • Click on Install. • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop. • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis. • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad. • The log will be saved as HijackThis.log in the C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis folder. • Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Well there was an update for AVG which i installled, then i noticed the internet web pages weren't loading. After all i did above i enabled link-scanner, which i've always had off as it seems to slow web pages, then the internet pages were loading. I might try and uninstall AVG then install a customised install and not select link-scanner or email scanner, would you agree as i don't use these 2 ?
yeh well i'm not debating which anti-virus is better, i've had no problems with AVG apart from this. Even if you think it slows your computer down, it shouldn't be slowing the internet down to such an extent that it is.

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition is touted and extremely popular. Although this venerable antivirus was once highly regarded, in recent times, although it is not bad, it is not comparable to the above mentioned free antivirus software. It has grown considerably in size and resource usage, has low detection rates, very slow scan speeds and scans every internet page you bring up slowing your browsing considerably. Carry on…….. 2oG

I just did away with AVG and zone alarm and tried this new virgin media software that comes free as we are paying for better broadband. Scan speeds seem a little slow and startup is a little longer so i would appreciate after looking at my log what free software would you recommend. By the way the virgin media software has a anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall, identitiy theft protection, privacy manager, ad blocker and a useless parental control. At the moment, i'm not content with the virgin media software.

I haven't really been having problems with the slowness of my computer, just the internet with AVG, which i've un-installed. However, i did follow the steps just to see if i noticed any changes, which i didn't really. Anyway thanks for that as i'll be able to use it in the future, even though some of those steps were familiar with me. So now we can move on to what software i should have?
The purpose for that was not because you were having problems with slowness. It was intended to put us on the same page concerning the status of your computer. I am not a clairvoyant, don’t read tea leaves and have never owned a crystal ball. If you step through those procedures and report anything unusual that happens, it will give me clues to any underlying problems that may be present. Without it, I am just guessing…. My recommendation on an AV is to get rid of the ISP provided Virgin Media and replace it with a good Free Antivirus. If you ask 20 users, what is the Best AV, you will get 20 different answers depending on what they like, what they have heard, etc., etc. Using the findings from an Independent Testing Service, AV comparatives (see the links) and my own testing over the past 10 years I will make 3 recommendations. Here are my choices: #1 – Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Very Fast Scan Speeds Detection rate for known viruses, Trojans, spyware, malware, etc. - 99.4% For new and unknown malware etc. - 74% It has some False Positives but I have never had a problem with them. I had rather have a 74% detection rate with a few FP’s than a 49% rate with less.. #2 – Avast! Free Antivirus 5.0 Very Fast Scan Speeds Detection known - 98% Detection Unknown - 53% #3 – Microsoft Security Essentials Slow Scan Speeds Detection known - 90% Detection Unknown - 56% AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition deserves a special mention because it is so popular. I have dropped it from my recommended list because of slow scan speeds, high resource usage and internet slow down especially on single core machines under 2GHz. Detection known - 94% Detection Unknown - 49% As for a Firewall – I have my machines on a network through a Router with a hardware firewall and all my machines are running Windows 7 firewall which is superior to the XP firewall…. Thanks 2OldGeek for all your help and recommendations of the software. I am now using Avira-Antivir-Free anti-virus due to your recommendation and Zone Alarm Free as it's so simple to use. With my first scan with Avira, it found 35 Warnings but no detections but still said i had not completed a system scan. So i did another system scan, it found 4 warnings and now it no longer says that a system scan had not taken place. Other than those warnings, which i'm not too sure what they mean, it's working fine.
You’re welcome, wrules. Always happy when my meager offerings can help someone.. As you may know, the pay here really sucks. Lol Don’t worry about the warnings. They are normal and usually come from locked files like the swap files in virtual memory and System Restore Files, that can’t be accessed. Avira will give you a Log that you can look over to see just what the warnings are but, unless you are a Geek (with a capital G) forget it! ZoneAlarm is a good choice and usually what I recommend because of the simplicity and the fact that it’s a very good firewall that I personally used for many years. Be sure to install SpywareBlaster and update it once a week.. I put it in a schedule to run each Thursday and when it pops up, I update it and close it. That way I don’t forget. Okay lol. Currently i'm not using spyware blaster as AVIRA covers spyware. Or should i be using it? AAfter looking at reviews of AVIRA it says that it blocks out spyware so i decided to leave it with avira and zone alarm.
SpywareBlaster is a spyware Blocker and not a scanner. Therefore, it does not interfere with Antivir, which is a scanner. It’s adding an extra layer of protection by setting a kill bit in the CLSID of known spyware. It is not running and uses no system resources… SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of many so-called spyware, adware and malware programs by disabling the CLSIDs of popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage. This allows you to run Internet Explorer with Active-X enabled, but it will never download or even prompt you for any of the known ActiveX controls. All other Active-X controls or plug-ins will work fine. The SpywareBlaster database contains information on these known spyware Active-X controls and can be updated with the click of a button. The application windows displays a list of all controls that it is able to detect (this is not a list of what was found on your computer). The program cannot detect if you have any of the known objects already installed, but if you do, they will be disabled. The program also allows you to take a snapshot of your computer (certain settings) in its clean state and later revert many changes made by spyware and browser hijackers. skip the antispyware software, it will slow you down again. Instead use a sandbox when your browsing. Either sandboxie or returnil. My system xp sp3 1. zone alarm free firewall 2. avira free 3. firefox browser 4. sandboxie That's all I use, no slowdown and very efficient.
