    avi's are easiest
    just use dvixtodvd to convert them,then burn them to dvd
    you may need winrar to extarct the images/files once downloaded
    the files will look like this for example
    rar.001
    rar.002 etc

    Most of the formats can be converted to VCD (Video-CD), SVCD (Super Video CD) or DVD movies. Search http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/ for guides.
    Take care: this if often a process made on 2 steps:
    1) encoding the movie in propeer form (MPEG-1, MPEG-2; PAL/NTSC; eventually WAV or AC3 audio for greater formats...)
    2) authoring (MPG --> (S)VCD/DVD image ; burning it...)

    Just take care:
    1) MPEGs are either PAL or NTSC, if they don't mach your system the movie must be re-encoded or you'll look it black and white
    2) 100% of the DVD played play DVD and VCD, less then 100% play SVCD. Consult your player's manual.
    3) if you look on http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/196299 you'll see the links to many guids and some 'check' to do (like the one to avoid having audio out-of-sync by using some AVIs)
    Welcome to the club. Good work...
