iphone 3g jailbroken running os 3.0.1 like to upgrade fw

    Hi I have a few apps that are out of date and requesting me to update but they wont since it states i need later firmware what FW can i go to without loosing my jailbrake?
    I guess I could do a cidia backup program for my cydia apps and back up in ttunes and go to FW 4.2? then re jail brake or can I just load new FW ?

    update to ios 5, there is a jailbrake for it now using redsn0w
