Hi, I have a sony dvd player about 6 years old, some dvd-r video's stop when I play them, not all but some, the video's that stop in my dvd player will play fine in the computer, some play for just 5 mins and stop others can play almost to the end of the movie, do you think its the dvd player?
Could be a few things. For instance, if you originally burned using cheap blank media it could cause problems in the long run. Could be your dvd player isn't fond of the media and/or the format you're using. Some of these standalones can be quite picky. Does your Dvd player play the original movies fine?
My last couple of dvd players also had those issues. It was a signal that they were dying. My sony also acted the same with original dvds as well.Cleaning the laser lens may help.Be cautious with the hard cleaning discs because they can ruin a drive-making it a last resort before drive replacement. Decent dvd players can be had for under $25. First,do like 7thsinger posted and see how it does with the original dvds. At least your pc plays them,so that verifies the discs are ok. You player may be getting picky in its old age. If it only acts up with backups, then check the MID codes of the good playing discs, and the discs that have issues. This free program will tell you the MID code: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd-r_tools/dvd_identifier.cfm Lots of things that can cause those issues: 1)Crap media 2)Burned too fast 3) Crappy burner 4)Paper sticker labels 5)Multi-tasking during the dvd backup process 6)Burn engine-try another burn program 7) Dirty laser lens-in the drive that shows the issues. That's a few culprits to your issue.
